There are many professional sports in which the weather doesn't play a factor. But in football, teams are required to show up in the rain, sleet, or shine. Some of the most memorable games in NFL history have come under extreme weather conditions. The Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to play in the elements already once this season.
Against the Cowboys in Week 5, the Steelers took the field after ninety minutes of weather delays from lightning strikes. By the time they took the field, players on both sides dealt with slippery and sloppy conditions.
In Week 10, the Steelers won't have to deal with anything like this, but a dreary afternoon appears to be in their future as they take on the Washington Commanders in a highly-anticipated out-of-conference matchup.
Steelers could be dealing with rain vs. Commanders in Week 10
The Steelers are traveling to Washington for their Week 10 matchup at Northwest Stadium. According to AccuWeather.com, the weather in Washington on Sunday afternoon is calling for a 55 percent chance of rain (0.02 inches) with 100 percent cloud cover.
The Steelers and Commanders could also be dealing with 9 mile per hour south winds and 15 mph wind gusts. The temperature will hover around 57 degrees with a real feel of 55 degrees.
While these conditions are hardly abnormal for November football, rain can always impact how the game is played when it comes to philosophy and execution for both teams. If the game balls get slick and the field is slippery, teams could struggle to move the ball through the air.
Meanwhile, the Commanders are a team that boasts the third-best scoring offense in the NFL. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has nearly 2,000 passing yards in the first half of the season -- even after exiting Washington's Week 7 contest against the Panthers after throwing just two passes in the first quarter.
The Steelers have also found success through the air as of late since making the switch to veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson's signature throw is the moonball down the sidelines, but the forecasted rain and wind could make it more difficult for Wilson to connect with players like George Pickens and newcomer Mike Williams down the field.
The good news is that fans shouldn't have to suffer through the weather delays like we saw in Week 5 on Sunday Night Football. If the Steelers do deal with rain in Week 10 let's hope the weather conditions favor the composition of their team in this contest over the Commanders.
