Last offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways with former starting running back Najee Harris, as the 2021 first-round pick left in free agency to join the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, Harris sustained an offseason eye injury in 2025 before suffering a torn left Achilles last September.
Now nearly a year removed from the injury, Harris is looking to mount an NFL comeback—this time with the New York Giants.
On Monday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that the Giants are bringing in Harris for a visit. Giants' new head coach John Harbaugh is very familiar with the bruising running back. As the former HC of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh was tasked with facing Harris twice per year.
Harris began his NFL career with four straight 1,000-yard rushing campaigns in Pittsburgh. Sadly, he's been an afterthought since his injury. Now the former Alabama prospect and 2021 Pro Bowler could revive his career if he signs with New York.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Najee Harris could be the perfect RB2 for the New York Giants
With John Harbaugh leading the team and Matt Nagy calling the offense, the Giants are expected to run a hybrid-scheme offense that blends under-center concepts with high pre-snap window dressing and gap-scheme elements. Because of this, Harris feels like a perfect fit.
But earning a starting role may be out of the question if he signs with the Giants.
Last year, fourth-round draft pick Cam Skattebo hit the ground running and was off to a spectacular start before a gruesome ankle injury claimed the second half of his rookie season. Before the injury, Skattebo was already looking like one of the best short-yardage and goal-line backs in the league.
Harris would offer a perfect insurance policy for the Giants if Skattebo gets hurt. And he's already shown he can handle the brunt of the workload if needed.
Of course, Najee must pass a physical and prove that he's fully recovered from the Achilles injury if he wants to stick around in New York as Skattebo's backup. But considering the underwhelming depth behind the second-year back, Harris could carve out a role early if he signs.
Steelers fans don't have any ill wishes toward Harris, as he carried the ball nearly 1,100 times behind a bad offensive line when he was in Pittsburgh. We'll be rooting for the 2021 first-round pick to rebound and get his NFL career back on track with a new team, and if all goes well, it looks like that could be with Harbaugh and the Giants.
