Ex-Steelers star wide receiver already in the doghouse with new team
He is falling from grace, so what is happening with Diontae Johnson and the Baltimore Ravens? He was traded from Pittsburgh to Carolina this past March for Donte Jackson and a pick swap in the upcoming NFL draft. He failed during his time in Carolina for a myriad of reasons. Not all the blame for Johnson's shortcomings with the Panthers can be laid at his feet.
That marriage was short-lived and Carolina dealt Johnson to the Ravens just before the trade deadline for a fifth-round pick. Many applauded the move at the time as the former star receiver for the Steelers seemed to still have some quality play left in the tank. Add in the fact that Johnson would play Pittsburgh twice, and many thought he would provide some sort of revenge on his former club.
That did not happen when the Steelers faced the Ravens the first time as he didn't play a big factor in that outcome. Beyond that, Johnson has fallen out of grace with the purple and black quickly. He was seemingly benched in Week 13, despite a big injury to the Ravens' receiving core.
Something bad is brewing between the Ravens and Johnson, and things look bleak for the former star player.
Diontae Johnson is not enjoying time away from the Steelers since trade
When you count his time in Carolina, this season has mostly been a disaster for Johnson. He had some decent games here and there with the Panthers, but his trade to Baltimore seemed to be his best shot to increase his stock in the NFL. The opposite has happened, and the former playmaker in Pittsburgh could struggle to land a job when free agency rolls around.
It was rumored that the black and gold wanted to move Johnson because of his poor locker room presence. That seems to be popping up more after he departed the Steelers organization. A lot of problems can be overlooked when it comes to a bad attitude if you can produce quality play on the field. Johnson is not producing right now, and it has him in the doghouse with Baltimore.
He is playing for a big contract this offseason, but at this current pace, he might struggle to find work in the NFL. Some team might take a flyer on him for cheap, but Johnson could be shoved out of the professional ranks if he doesn't clean up his act soon. The Ravens might be forced to use him going forward since Rashod Bateman suffered an injury in their Week 13 matchup against Philadelphia.
Failing two different clubs in the same season might be a record for someone who has played at a high caliber level like Johnson. The Ravens have a quality offense, and it is mind-boggling that the move has not helped either party in this case. Things seem to be falling apart between Johnson and Baltimore. Pittsburgh can just sit there and bask in the ugliness that could heighten further.
