Former Steelers QB booed in his new stadium before even taking a snap

Tough look for the 10-time Pro-Bowler.

The Pittsburgh Steelers' decisions at quarterback this offseason have been heavily scrutinized for months, and for good reason. After adding both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields (now with the New York Giants and Jets, respectively) during the 2024 offseason, neither proved to be the answer the team was looking for at the game's most important position.

Even so, choosing to let both of them go only to spend months chasing Aaron Rodgers was a twist few saw coming. Rodgers ultimately signed (and has had a strong camp thus far), but many still wonder how much better the former MVP will be compared to the Wilson/Fields combo of a year ago.

Based on what happened to Wilson at WWE's SummerSlam event in his new home stadium, however, his new team's fans seem to think he doesn't have much left in the tank. The 10-time Pro-Bowler was shown on the broadcast with his sons at MetLife Stadium, and fans really let him have it.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson may have to get used to being booed by New York Giants fans

It's fair to assume there were plenty of Giants fans in attendance Sunday night, and they are justifiably frustrated by how their front office has operated for nearly a decade. After years of stability at QB thanks to Eli Manning's presence, New York has struggled to find their next franchise signal caller.

Steelers fans are in the same boat, but the defense and coaching have kept Pittsburgh competitive despite their inability to replace Ben Roethlisberger. The Giants, meanwhile, haven't had a 10-win season since 2016 and have just one playoff appearance in that same timeframe.

Adding Russell Wilson is likely an upgrade over what they have gotten out of Daniel Jones and company over the past few seasons, but to what end?

Wilson showed his age down the stretch of 2024, going 0-5 in his last five starts, including a dreadful playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. You can hardly blame Giants fans for being dissatisfied with him being the answer at QB.

Perhaps rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart will unseat him early in the season, or maybe we see one more Jameis Winston hot streak that allows him to take the starting job. Until then, however, Wilson may need to get used to getting booed at MetLife Stadium.
