It was a rollercoaster ride for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season with Russell Wilson as their quarterback. While he might settle a toxic situation, he will cause many headaches in his own right. He has the perfect personality that you'd love as your quarterback, but those tacky traits wear thin over time. Wilson's new venture with the New York Giants has their fans taking the bait.
Wilson might give them some of their best play at the position in years, but that's a light statement with the poor players they've had as signal callers since Eli Manning.
Early signs out of their minicamp continue to show Wilson putting on a show with his new team. He might hope it causes jealousy in Pittsburgh, but everyone knows it's just a matter of time before things start to sink into obscurity.
There has been constant social media footage showing the public highlights in hopes of raising Wilson's stock heading into the campaign.
The clips show Wilson building up his teammates and making plays around the field. He still has a strong arm at his age, but his continued hindrance is his height. He can still move his legs, but his lack of sack avoidance has become a concern. It forced the Steelers into a tailspin last season, as they lost their final five contests.
Pittsburgh Steelers know Russell Wilson's persona ends in catastrophic failure
Pittsburgh had no other choice but to let Wilson leave in free agency after their season concluded the way it did. He showed glimpses of brilliance, but once defenses realized they needed to defend short and deep options in the passing game, the Steelers never recovered. Wilson might have some good games left in the tank, but don't expect a different outcome in New York.

Minicamp is just the start of the preseason process for NFL teams. Wilson will gain Captain honors with the Giants, but it's hard for him to lead in toxic situations. Most of the top decision-makers in New York are on borrowed time. They need to win a lot of football games this season to save their jobs. That desperation can become tedious if losses stack up quickly.
Losing is one thing, but an outspoken cheerleader at quarterback will magnify problems.
Wilson runs his personality like a politician. He will win the hearts of fans and his teammates to get the starting gig, only to disappoint many while he is in office. You cannot discount the things he does for his community and the type of teammate he showed himself to be in Pittsburgh. He spent each week at Children's Hospital, and most teammates spoke highly of him.
He will go into his 14th year in the NFL, and it will be with a team less talented than the Steelers. Wilson might be showing some good things at minicamp, but he did the same in Pittsburgh during the preseason. Wilson will settle things down at the position, but he can also cause plenty of headaches without the ability to adjust his game as an aging quarterback.
New York would be foolish to expect a different player than what he showed with the Steelers.
