It seemed like the quarterback controversy within the New York Giants organization was pushed back a few weeks after Russell Wilson had a terrific outing in Week 2. Sadly for the former Pittsburgh Steelers' signal caller, that question has been shoved right back into the spotlight. Many in New York are calling for Wilson to be benched after a rough game in his Week 3 performance.
The Giants aren't as good a roster as the one Wilson got to enjoy with the Steelers last season.
It has produced different outcomes for the former star quarterback. He is an aging gunslinger with only a few tricks left in his toolkit. He might've lit up the Cowboys' defense a week prior, but the Kansas Chiefs knew how to beat him. They figured out that strategy when they beat the Steelers on Christmas Day last season.
Pittsburgh was buying what Wilson was selling for a while, but his words of leadership ran stale when losses piled up. The aging passer has produced a strong performance this season, but he is running out of time with the Giants. The fans of New York in blue want to see their young quarterback, Jaxson Dart, who the organization drafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Ex-Pittsburgh Steelers' QB Russell Wilson might be getting benched sometime soon
The fans were livid with their starting quarterback against the Chiefs. It wasn't a blowout like many expected, and the Giants kept the score tight. The issue was something the Steelers' offense struggled with last season; they couldn't score enough points. There were opportunities for Wilson to strike, but he failed, and their fans mixed chants of "we want Dart" with endless boos.

The Steelers didn't experience much quarterback controversy last season, even though Justin Fields was sitting behind the veteran quarterback. Mike Tomlin made an effort not to allow a controversy to hit the position despite Pittsburgh losing its final five games of the campaign.
Wilson isn't the same player, and the constant boos and chants by the Giants faithful will continue until Dart becomes the starter.
When the Giants eventually decide to turn to Dart to take over, they cannot bench the rookie. Taking Wilson off the field would make Dart their starter for the foreseeable future. They invested a top pick in this young player, and they must not waver in their decision. Having Wilson as the backup is something the Steelers never experienced during his tenure.
New York's displeasure with its starting quarterbacks ever since Eli Manning retired is nothing uncommon. They are tired of losing, and Wilson appears to be a stopgap option for them. He has demonstrated the ability to deliver quality starts, but he is no longer the impact player he was with the Seattle Seahawks. It's a shame how Wilson's career has fizzled out as quickly as it has.
