Pittsburgh Steelers fans are used to George Pickens' theatrics. From showing up late to games to making silly decisions on the field, Pickens causing drama is something that has become a tradition during his time in Pittsburgh. Well, now his father is the one making headlines with a recent social media post.
In that post, Pickens' father, George Pickens Sr., threw serious shade at the Steelers for giving his son less-than-stellar quarterbacks during his tenure with the team. Pickens Sr. also praised his son's sanity for being in this situation.
"Food for Thought: GP has played with 1 Tribusky, 2 Pickett, 3 Rodolph, 4 Wilson, 5 Fields, 6 ????. All in 3 years. I can appreciate your sanity #14."
Pickens Sr. called out Steelers, praised son's "sanity"
It's true that the Steelers have been in quarterback purgatory since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season. They've tried making things work with Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields but nothing has stuck. Pickens Sr. even made it a point to list a sixth option with a question mark because we don't know who will be throwing the ball in Pittsburgh yet this year.
Even with the lack of quarterback talent in Pittsburgh over the past few seasons, Pickens has still put up respectable numbers, including a 1,000+ yard season in 2023. If the Steelers end up landing Aaron Rodgers in free agency, he'd give Pickens the best quarterback he's seen since entering the league in 2022.
Finding a franchise quarterback is difficult and this offseason isn't the time to be in search of one. The Steelers have hitched their wagon to Rodgers so if that doesn't pan out, they're going to be in a rough spot come the start of the regular season.
Bringing Rodgers in might give the Steelers a bit of a boost at the quarterback spot but he, like Pickens, has a flare for the dramatics. Sometimes having players with strong personalities can be a good thing but all it would take is Rodgers not targeting Pickens one week for things to get wild.
There have been trade rumors surrounding Pickens, especially now that Pittsburgh has DK Metcalf for whoever quarterbacks the team to throw to. It truthfully wouldn't be an awful idea given the dramatic history between the two but we'll have to see how everything goes down. Maybe Rodgers joining the team would be enough for Pickens to want to stay.
