After only two years with the Minnesota Vikings, J.J. McCarthy was traded to the New York Giants for pennies on the dollar. The Vikings admitted defeat by sending McCarthy to the 'Big Apple', and it should send a warning sign to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers are still on the hunt for Aaron Rodgers' long-term successor, and this McCarthy trade news goes to show that investing a high-end pick could have negative ramifications.
For those of you who don't remember the 2024 NFL Draft, the quarterback prospects received high praise. Players like Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy were all considered slam-dunk prospects. This trade of McCarthy to the Giants for only a 2027 fifth-round pick shows why Pittsburgh should be careful with its evaluations at the position.
Everyone thought McCarthy would become a terrific franchise quarterback for the Vikings after they traded up one slot in the first round that year to select him. Sadly, he wasn't able to develop on the sidelines during his rookie campaign and lost his starting job rather quickly when he was given a shot.
The Steelers have to be cautious with how they address the most important position in football with the post-Rodgers era looming.

There has been constant chatter within Steelers Nation about the need for the team to 'tank' for a season or two to finally land a franchise quarterback. In reality, that is not always the best path to success. Sometimes you are better off lucking out with a quarterback falling to you in the draft or finding someone who might not be held in such high regard entering the draft who turns into a star.
This J.J. McCarthy trade just goes to show that just because you take a signal caller high in the draft, it doesn't always work out. You could turn into a team that struggles to locate a long-term quarterback option in the draft, and before you know it, you turn into the Cleveland Browns. Many might think having Mike McCarthy as the head coach would solve these worries, but it shouldn't.
Minnesota has one of the best play-calling geniuses in football in their head coach, Kevin O'Connell. He is an offensive-minded guy like McCarthy, and yet he failed to turn J.J. McCarthy into a franchise quarterback.
Pittsburgh is still holding onto some hope that Drew Allar or Will Howard will turn into long-term starters at the quarterback position, but don't rule out drafting a player high in the 2027 NFL Draft.
To make matters worse for Minnesota, they traded up from pick 11 to ten in the 2024 draft to select McCarthy and had to give up a fourth-round pick and swap a fifth-rounder for a sixth-round pick.
That is a high cost, only for the prospect to become a bust. This just shows that tanking and being within striking distance of drafting a highly regarded quarterback prospect isn't the slam-dunk plan for the Steelers, as some want you to believe.
