You have to assume the Pittsburgh Steelers are likely done adding a quarterback to their roster for now, but that situation could still change. Top prospect Brendan Sorsby is continuing to fight for an injunction that would allow him to play college football this season, despite NCAA claims that he gambled as a college athlete.

If that situation doesn't shift in his favor, it could open the door for Mike McCarthy to push for the Steelers to target Sorsby this summer.

For those wondering, Brendan Sorsby could potentially lose his college eligibility to play football. If that happens, his best course of action would be to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. According to draft analyst Tony Pauline, Sorsby could force a team to use their 2027 first-round pick. Despite the concerns surrounding him, several NFL clubs may still consider using a high pick in 2027 on him.

If the gambling issue had never surfaced, Brendan Sorsby would have been on track to become a standout transfer addition for Texas Tech. Now, it appears he will not suit up for the program and could instead enter the NFL under difficult circumstances. He still offers significant upside and skill set. Mike McCarthy is aware of that potential, and he could convince the Steelers that Sorsby is worth the risk.

Nothing is set in stone, but it appears Brendan Sorsby’s time as a college quarterback could be coming to an end. If that becomes reality, entering the NFL Supplemental Draft would be the most logical next step in his career. He has plenty of raw talent to develop, and several teams are likely to show interest in adding him to their roster.

The concern for the Steelers, however, is whether they would be taking on too much risk by investing heavily in a prospect surrounded by uncertainty.

In essence, selecting Sorsby in the Supplemental Draft would be similar to buying a lottery ticket. It carries significant uncertainty, but it could also lead to a valuable outcome, especially with Mike McCarthy developing him. Adding Sorsby would be intriguing, but using a 2027 first or second-round pick on him, as Tony Pauline has suggested, would be an especially bold decision.

With Drew Allar and Will Howard currently competing for spots on the depth chart, it does not make much sense to add Sorsby with a high-end pick. Unless Mike McCarthy is completely convinced that this young quarterback can develop into something special, the move would be difficult to justify.

The Steelers already have four players at the position, and bringing in another young option would likely mean moving on from Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.

When you factor in the limited roster space, along with the gambling issues that forced Brendan Sorsby into rehab, the risk may simply be too high for the Steelers. If there were a scenario in which Sorsby fell to a late round pick or went undrafted, Pittsburgh could justify taking a chance on him. Mike McCarthy would welcome the opportunity to add him, but as things stand, the fit is not ideal.
