Best team fits emerging for Steelers veteran if Pittsburgh cuts bait

There could be plenty of suitors for the veteran QB.

With four quarterbacks currently on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster, it is reasonable to expect that one will not remain for long. Teams rarely carry four quarterbacks on the final 53-man roster, and there is little reason to believe this year will be any different. Unless the Steelers break from their usual approach, a move is likely coming.

As a result, longtime veteran backup Mason Rudolph appears to be the early odd man out.

Unless Will Howard struggles during training camp and the preseason, Rudolph appears to be the early favorite to be cut. The quarterback room is largely set, but losing Rudolph’s experience could create challenges at some point during the season. If injuries do not arise this preseason, the veteran should have no shortage of potential landing spots once the Steelers make him available.

New York Jets

No one should expect the Jets to make a serious push for contention this year, but they could benefit from added stability at the backup quarterback position. Geno Smith is currently in the mix, and the team showed interest in former Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson earlier this offseason.

Mason Rudolph could provide a reliable option who is capable of starting when needed, even if those opportunities come during a rebuilding phase.

Arizona Cardinals

Some viewed Arizona as a potential destination for Aaron Rodgers before he re-signed with the Steelers, which highlights the team’s ongoing need at quarterback. The Cardinals lack proven experience at the position, and Jacoby Brissett’s contract situation has created additional uncertainty. Mason Rudolph would provide a steady veteran presence and offer valuable depth.

Miami Dolphins

There appears to be little optimism that the Dolphins will finish outside of the top five in the 2027 draft based on how this season is shaping up. Malik Willis is currently the starter, but the depth behind him is lacking. Miami could present an appealing landing spot for Rudolph. The team may not be competitive this season, but it offers Rudolph a legitimate chance to start games.

Atlanta Falcons

All eyes will be on Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. as they compete for the starting job.

Atlanta enters the season with modest expectations, but the team could benefit from a reliable veteran in the third quarterback spot. Both Tagovailoa and Penix have dealt with injuries, so adding Mason Rudolph would provide valuable insurance. Giving the veteran a chance to step in and start, if needed, would be a smart move for the franchise.

Indianapolis Colts

As the Colts explore a potential trade involving Anthony Richardson Sr., they could turn to the Steelers for help at quarterback. Mason Rudolph would be a logical fit alongside Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard on the roster. All three share similar playing styles, and the added competition could benefit the entire room. Having an experienced backup like Rudolph would be essential to win.
