The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense came plummeting back down to earth in Week 2 after a dismal showing in their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Somehow, Aaron Rodgers managed to throw for merely 37 yards in the first half while leading the Steelers to three second-half points in the 31-17 loss.

But as bad as the passing game looked at times in Week 2, the Steelers can already feel justified in their decision to let Justin Fields walk during the 2025 offseason.

In Week 1 against the New York Jets, Fields torched the Steelers' defense for a 32-point outing. The dual-threat quarterback managed 218 yards on 9.9 yards per attempt while chipping in 48 yards on the ground and two total scores. But in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, Fields showed his true colors.

After getting off to a hot start, Fields had a chance to keep the offensive momentum going in a big divisional game and his second straight home contest. Instead, things couldn't have gone worse for the 2021 first-round pick.

In what seems like a nearly impossible feat, Fields managed to complete just three of 11 passes on the afternoon for just 27 yards. This equated to a dismal 2.5 yards per attempt and an inexplicably poor 39.6 passer rating.

Fields' pitiful performance had social media blowing up with harsh comments toward the quarterback's performance, saying things like Fields is 'Not an NFL quarterback' and that folks got fooled by his Week 1 performance.

The Pittsburgh Steelers can feel vindicated in decision to move on from QB Justin Fields

Many Pittsburgh Steelers fans were doubting the team's decision to move on from Fields, and it stung to watch the 26-year-old have a remarkable showing last week against the Steelers. However, Fields quickly showed us that he's the same quarterback he's been since entering the league—a QB that both the Bears and Steelers already gave up on.

During the 2025 offseason, Fields left Pittsburgh for greener pastures when he signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Jets. After Week 1, it looked like the Jets were getting a solid bridge quarterback with the chance to be something more. Now this contract already looks like a colossal waste of $40 million.

After leading the offense to just three points in the first three quarters, Fields was eventually pulled from the game when the Jets were down 30-3. That's when backup Tyrod Taylor came in and threw for twice as many yards (56) and a touchdown on the same number of attempts (11).

It won't take many performances like this from Fields before the Jets decide to turn the page, and—just like we saw from Mike Tomlin and the Steelers last season—benching Fields isn't out of the question for the New York Jets.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a terrible offensive showing in Week 1, but at least Aaron Rodgers looked significantly better than Justin Fields. Omar Khan made the right choice moving on from the polarizing young quarterback this past offseason.
