This makes too much sense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the summer to figure out who will be the odd man out at quarterback. With Aaron Rodgers, Drew Allar, Mason Rudolph, and Will Howard on the roster, one player from this group will almost certainly be gone.

But that shouldn't stop Omar Khan from adding a more talented QB to the room.

Texas Tech transfer Brendan Sorsby is expected to declare for the NFL supplemental draft, and he instantly becomes an intriguing option. NFL Draft expert Matt Miller recently wrote that he believes Sorby would have been the No. 2 quarterback taken in the 2026 draft, ahead of first-round pick Ty Simposon.

In the same ESPN article on Sorsby, analyst Ben Solak listed the Pittsburgh Steelers as a potential destination for the young quarterback.

"And finally, even more teams can field a developmental backup behind an aging passer or starter with an expiring contract. The Steelers obviously need a plan at QB for 2027 and beyond afterAaron Rodgers retires."

To be fair, the Steelers were hardly the only team listed, as Solak admitted that a quarter of the league could use his services. However, Pittsburgh is looking for a potential franchise QB in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era, and it would make sense to pursue Sorsby.

The Pittsburgh Steelers must consider QB Brendan Sorsby in the NFL supplemental draft

Sorsby doesn't come without problems. The young student athlete has been under the spotlight since admitting to placing sports bets. As a player, he still has room to grow when it comes to consistency and accuracy on a play-to-play basis.

However, Sorsby has an excellent blend of NFL tools and a frame to hold up at the next level. He possesses the ability to throw on the run and move the chains with his legs. If added to the Steelers' roster, he would easily be the most promising QB for 2027 and beyond.

Obviously, adding Sorsby would create a small dilemma. The Steelers would go from having four quarterbacks to five—making the decision to cut down even more difficult. At the same time, the solution would be staring the team in the face.

Pittsburgh would keep Rodgers as their starting QB for the 2026 season, while keeping Sorsby and Allar to duke it out. Whichever quarterback is further along by next August could be their starter for 2027. Unfortunately, the Steelers wouldn't love the fact that neither of Rodgers' backups would have any NFL experience during a pivotal 2026 season.

Regardless, it's worth noting that the Steelers are a team in need of a long-term quarterback, and we can't rely on a third-round pick like Drew Allar or a sixth-round pick like Will Howard to be that guy. Sorsby is more promising than either, and the Steelers should consider taking him in the NFL supplemental draft.
