NFL insider hints at a Steelers WR trade target that makes too much sense
By Ryan Heckman
For months now, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the teams trying their hardest to get help at the wide receiver position. By now, most Steelers fans know all about the storylines.
Dating back to before the season began, Pittsburgh was in on trading for Brandon Aiyuk, who wound up getting a new deal from the San Francisco 49ers. A few weeks back, the Steelers were definitely in on the Davante Adams sweepstakes, but missed out.
Now, we have seen the likes of Amari Cooper, DeAndre Hopkins and most recently, Diontae Johnson, get traded before next Tuesday's deadline. There aren't a lot of options left at the position; at least, none of them bigger names.
But, the Steelers still have a few wide receivers to pick from on the trade market, if they opted to make a move. NFL insider James Palmer recently spoke about the Steelers' plans to find help, here, and acknowledged the organization is actively looking.
"Obviously the Steelers are poking around at receivers to compliment George Pickens," he said.
Which of the potential targets, left, makes the most sense for Pittsburgh? Actually, it's someone they just got a good chance to see up close and personal, Monday night, in the win over the New York Giants.
Darius Slayton would be the perfect trade target to compliment new starting quarterback Russell Wilson
"They just had a chance to take an up-close look at Darius Slayton, so we'll see what ends up happening there. That's a team definitely to keep your eye on," Palmer finished.
Based on Palmer's report, fans can rest assured knowing this team is still active in trying to find help at wide receiver. Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin have done some things, here and there, but getting a guy like Slayton might be the right way to go.
More Steelers news:
Slayton has been underrated for most of his career, finishing with at least 700 receiving yards in four of five seasons and well on pace to top that mark again this year, currently sitting at 420 in eight games.
Having two 100-plus yard outings so far, Slayton continues to be a deep threat and someone Daniel Jones can go to on a big play at times. He has excellent deep speed and has routinely made some impressive catches down the sideline, which would pair up well with Russell Wilson.
Since Wilson took over as the team's starter, the offense has looked a lot different, and in a good way. Wilson takes more chances and unleashes the ball down the field much more than Justin Fields had been doing, and adding another option like Slayton to the fold would only further that offensive progress.
Slayton is in the final year of his contract, too, so he wouldn't cost a whole lot. If Pittsburgh could get him for a conditional sixth-round pick, or maybe even a seventh, that should be a no-brainer.
