Omar Khan is still bullish on one struggling Steelers draft pick

Khan isn't giving up on this disappointing player yet.

When the media caught up with Omar Khan in Indianapolis, they didn't miss a chance to ask all the questions the fanbase has been dying to figure out. The Pittsburgh Steelers' general manager addressed multiple questions regarding Aaron Rodgers, where the Steelers could look in the NFL Draft, and which potential roster moves could be looming.

But Khan was also asked about a lesser-discussed player he drafted two years ago—Roman Wilson.

Wilson, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, struggled in his second NFL season and has yet to make a consistent impact on the field. When asked about Wilson, Khan's response made it clear that he's still bullish on the young wide receiver.

"You guys have heard me talk about my belief in Roman [Wilson]. I think Roman's a talented player, and I expect him to contribute. I know the coaching staff is excited to work with him.

His rookie year, he got hurt, and that was a little bit of a setback. And last year, the opportunities didn't come like everybody would have liked, but I think he's got a good future."

The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to use WR Roman Wilson in 2026

With the way things were trending late in the 2025 season, Steelers fans wouldn't have been surprised to see the team cut bait with the young draft pick altogether in 2026. Wilson was a healthy scratch late in the season, and former head coach Mike Tomlin didn't deem him worthy of an active roster spot over players like Adam Thielen or Marquez Valdez-Scantling.

Regardless, Khan offers hope for Wilson's future with the team.

After playing just five offensive snaps as a rookie in 2024 (largely due to a high ankle sprain and a hamstring injury), Wilson managed a mere 12 receptions on 21 targets for 166 yards and two touchdowns in his second season in 2025.

Now entering year three, Wilson has plenty of ground to make up after a remarkably slow start to his NFL career. Khan believes in the skill set. The Steelers drafted the No. 1 receiver from a championship Michigan team that had a drop rate of just 2.3 percent in his final college season.

In addition to being a sure-handed prospect, Wilson possesses 4.39 speed with smooth movement skills and the ability to create separation. Now it's a matter of refining his craft and getting up to speed with the mental part of the game so that his quarterback and his coaches can count on him.

There's no doubt the Steelers are going to seek outside help at the wide receiver position. Pittsburgh could dip its toes into the WR pool as early as the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and with the Steelers currently holding 12 draft selections, doubling up at the receiver position isn't out of the question.

We don't know what type of role Roman Wilson will play for Pittsburgh during the 2026 season, but Khan—who confidently drafted the Michigan product just two years ago—is still a firm believer in his talent, and he made that clear with his comments at the NFL Combine.
