Since taking over as general manager on May 25, 2022, Omar Khan has made some impressive draft picks. Two players from the 2023 class—Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington—already broke the bank with rich new deals this offseason, and Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton proved to be second-round hits.
But the Steelers' 2024 class already looks just as good... and the latest NFL redraft just made it look even better.
Earlier this week, Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports dropped his full 2024 first-round redraft. Two Steelers were drafted in the first round: center Zach Frazier and offensive tackle Troy Fautanu.
The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 draft class already has a pair of long-time cornerstones
Fautanu was Pittsburgh's 20th overall pick in 2024. In CBS Sports' redraft, the Washington product slipped a bit—falling to the Kansas City Chiefs with the 28th overall pick. Still, it's an accomplishment that he remains a first-round selection in the redraft, considering he missed almost his entire rookie season with a knee injury.
Interestingly, Frazier—the Steelers' 51st overall pick in Round 2—vaulted all the way up to the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NFL redraft. This is even higher than Pittsburgh's original first-round selection, suggesting that, if all of these players were thrown back into the draft pool, Pittsburgh wouldn't even be selecting high enough to take Frazier in the first round.
Based on their early-career performances, Frazier and Fautanu should become long-term starters along the offensive line, and it's easy to spot Pro Bowl upside in their games.
What's wild is that these weren't the only draft hits from 2024.
Though third-round wide receiver Roman Wilson has struggled much more than anticipated and could be in line for a reduced role with the additions of Germie Bernard and Michael Pittman Jr., Payton Wilson flashed promise at times last year, and a Year 3 leap isn't out of the question for the 6'4'' linebacker with blazing speed.
However, the biggest overall steal is perhaps a player who wasn't taken in the redraft: Mason McCormick.
The fourth-round pick from the South Dakota State Jackrabbits has been sneakily impressive early in his career, and his performance has been on par with Frazier and Fautanu's at times.
Even if the rest of the Steelers' 2024 class doesn't pan out as advertised, fans can take comfort knowing that Khan landed two first-round talents in Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu in the draft despite just one selection in the top 50. This boost to the trenches is already being felt, and the young offensive linemen should only continue to improve in their third season in 2026.
