After months of waiting, the Pittsburgh Steelers have finally taken the field for their 2026 training camp. The Steelers are coming off a season that ended with another early postseason exit, but the coaching change from Mike Tomlin to Mike McCarthy offers hope.
Steelers training camp should provide a glimpse of what to expect from this team in 2026. Though McCarthy admitted his team won't have live tackling sessions, he's already increased the tempo at practice compared to what we're used to seeing.
As always, there will be plenty of roster battles to watch, as players on the roster bubble look to make a name for themselves during camp. This year's camp may not only shape the direction of the team for the upcoming season, but strong performances from the young talent on hand could offer promise of a bright future in Pittsburgh.

Top lessons learned from Steelers training camp so far
Steelers are getting creative with interior defensive line looks
Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham hasn't stuck with the status quo in the interior defensive line; he's been busy moving players around. Keeanu Benton has played 3-4 defensive end (as opposed to nose tackle, where he's played over the past three seasons), while Yahya Black has been taking snaps at nose tackle this year. Even veteran Cam Heyward has seen some work at nose tackle.
Asante Samuel Jr. is itching for a comeback
Asante Samuel Jr. has been one of the standout players early at Steelers training camp, with numerous pass breakups in the first week of practice. Samuel, who wasn't cleared to play until November of 2025 after undergoing spinal fusion surgery, is already taking advantage of Joey Porter Jr.'s absence. He could have a big role in 2026 at this rate.
Broderick Jones is healthy and ready to go
Broderick Jones was a limited participant in the Steelers' mandatory minicamp after undergoing spinal fusion surgery this offseason, so fans didn't know if he'd be ready to take the field for the start of training camp. It turns out, Jones is a full-go. The 2023 first-round pick was able to avoid beginning camp on the PUP list. So far, Jones has been working as the second-team left tackle.
Mason Rudolph is running as the Steelers' QB2
Entering Steelers camp, there was much speculation as to which quarterback would get the first shot at the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers. The first practice made that clear, as it was Mason Rudolph taking the second-team reps as the QB2 for Pittsburgh. This could change as camp marches on, but it looks like Rudolph is going to get the first crack at proving he's the primary backup QB.
The Steelers' first-team offensive line takes shape
Day 1 of Steelers training camp gave us our first look at the offensive line pecking order. Troy Fautanu was running as the first-team left tackle. From left to right, it was Fautanu, Mason McCormick, Zach Frazier, Spencer Anderson, and Dylan Cook with the first team. Meaning that players like Broderick Jones, Gennings Dunker, Max Iheanachor, and Brock Hoffman are running with the backups early in camp.
Injury updates
RB/WR Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich is dealing with an apparent leg injury, as he was spotted with a sleve on his right leg. Heidenreich did not participate in Saturday night's practice.
S Jaquan Brisker
Jaquan Brisker was absent from the Steelers' Saturday Night Lights practice. His injury is unknown.
DL Sebastian Joseph-Day
Sebastian Joseph-Day did not participate in Saturday's practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium. It's unknown if he is suffering from an ailment or if he was given the day off.
OL Max Iheanachor
Rookie tackle Max Iheanachor left practice early on Thursday with some kind of upper-body injury, and he missed Saturday's evening practice. Iheanachor returned to the field on August 10, but was limited.
DL Logan Lee
Logan Lee was spotted without pads on the sideline when padded practices kicked off. His injury is undisclosed, but it's not a good sign that a roster-bubble player hasn't been on the field to prove himself among a crowded DL goup.
WR Cole Burgess
Cole Burgess was injured on the first padded practice of Steelers training camp on August 3. Burgess suffered a leg injury and appeared to be in a lot of pain as he left the field on a cart. This was the first potentially serious injury of training camp.
CB Joey Porter Jr.
Joey Porter Jr. surprisingly began training camp on the PUP list. The fourth-year cornerback is reportedly dealing with a back injury, but he was seen throwing the football on the sidelines on Day 1 of Steelers camp. Porter is awaiting a contract extension, so the timing of the ailment has fans speculating about the extent of his injury.
DB Jalen Ramsey
Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey tweaked his knee during mandatory minicamp, and he begins training camp on the PUP list.
S Deshon Elliott
Veteran safety DeShon Elliott has been on the field but has been practicing limited with the Steelers as he works his way back from a hamstring tear and hyperextended knee he suffered in Week 8 of the 2025 season. The coaching staff is being cautious with him.
CB Donte Kent
Second-year cornerback Donte Kent is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered in December, 2025, and he began training camp on the PUP list. Kent was spotted running on the sidelines.
CB Brandin Echols
Similarly to Iheanachor, cornerback Brandin Echols is expected to miss the next few practices with an ankle inury.

What Aaron Rodgers is saying
“I obviously molded a lot of my philosophies based on playing under him, so to just have that common idea about how the offense should run and what it needs to look like is really fun. I couldn’t do it with a new coach. He could just let me go sometimes, and then sometimes he’d have to call me in on a Monday and say, ‘Listen, you changed 10 plays. Can we just go through why you changed these 10 plays?’”, We’d talk it out, and he’d see my side and we always kind of met back in the middle on that. That was the beauty in the success that we had. It was a lot of push and pull. He gave me a lot of latitude and I proved that I deserved latitude and could make it work, and when I went too far, he’d rein me back in.” —Aaron Rodgers on head coach Mike McCarthy on August 13.
"I love being back with Mike. Mike and I have a lot of history together. You know, we were in different places when he first came out in '06 to Green Bay, but a lot has happened between then and now..." — Aaron Rodgers on The Pat McAfee Show on August 3.
"I thought last year might be it, and then Mike got hired, and then talked to the wife, and she said, ‘You can do one more year. See if it works out.’ And then it kinda all came together." — Aaron Rodgers told the media after players reported to camp on July 28.
What Mike McCarthy is saying
"Green Bay means a lot to me personally and professionally, but I am more worried about our pre-snap penalties right now, to be honest." — Mike McCarthy on the Steelers preparing for the preseason opener against the Packers on August 11.
“Every time his name comes up, huge first impression with me. Starting back in the spring, he’s obviously there every day. Great energy all the way through the offseason program. Love his ball skills, his instincts and his awareness. I think he’s had a great offseason. I think he’s having a better training camp. So, it’s been really good for him.” — Mike McCarthy on cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. on August 10.
"It's been fun. Personally, it's been awesome. The big thing is really, for him and I, how we're connected and how we engage with everyone else. I'm not as concerned about being on the same page with Aaron [Rodgers]..." —Mike McCarthy on his regular conversations with Aaron Rodgers on July 30.
"The fans are already lining up. The black and gold definitely resonates. I'm excited. I don't know if it's excitement or anxiety or both. I just want to have a good practice, professionally. But personally, I'm obviously very excited about this thing." — Mike McCarthy after his first Steelers training camp practice on July 29
