Steelers’ CB tandem gets love despite being left off top 10 rankings

This is a step in the right direction.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler released his annual top 10 cornerback rankings, a list crafted through the eyes of more than 70 NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. While the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t land a player in the top ten, there was still a bit of good news tucked in for Steelers fans—Jalen Ramsey earned an honorable mention, and Joey Porter Jr. received votes as well.

Sure, it’s not exactly headline-grabbing, but let’s be honest: this feels like a meaningful nod of approval. It’s been a long time since Pittsburgh was respected for having two potential difference-makers at the cornerback position.

For years, the secondary felt like a weak link. Now, under the vision of Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin, the Steelers are piecing together a duo that could redefine their defensive identity.

Ramsey’s inclusion in the honorable mentions makes sense. While his best years may be behind him, his football IQ, physicality, and leadership still demand respect. He might not be the same player who once locked down the entire field, but he’s far from washed.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally have a noteworthy CB duo heading into 2025

Meanwhile, Joey Porter Jr., heading into his second full season, continues to turn heads. He didn't crack the list, but receiving votes in a poll stacked with elite talent is an encouraging sign that league insiders are paying attention.

In 2024, Ramsey and Porter Jr. combined for just three interceptions—modest numbers, yes—but context matters. Both players were adjusting: Ramsey was returning from injury, and Porter Jr. was still gaining his footing as a full-time starter.

With a full offseason together and Pittsburgh’s revamped defensive scheme taking shape, I expect those numbers to climb.

It’s also worth mentioning that this kind of league-wide recognition, even if it's just honorable mentions and vote tallies, speaks to something deeper: validation.

Omar Khan’s aggressive offseason approach, which included acquiring Ramsey and continuing to develop Porter Jr., is starting to gain credibility beyond Pittsburgh. That matters.

This isn’t the final destination. This is the start of a journey.

For the first time in a long while, Steelers fans can realistically look at their cornerbacks and feel confident. Ramsey brings the savvy and presence, Porter Jr. brings the youthful fire—and together, they may evolve into one of the league’s most feared duos.

There’s still plenty to prove. But finally, the rest of the league is starting to take notice.
