Now that the full NFL schedule has been revealed, there are plenty of intriguing matchups and storylines for fans to look forward to as the season approaches. The Pittsburgh Steelers have their fair share of those, but it's the week they don't have a game that may be most impactful for their 2026 success.
Last season, the Steelers had an early Week 5 Bye, fresh off their trip to Ireland to face the Minnesota Vikings. While it was timed well, considering the international trip, it meant they would need to play 13 consecutive games (14 if you count the Wildcard game) to finish the season. This year, their in-season break not only comes later in the season, but just ahead of their most important (and hardest) stretch of the year.
Pittsburgh will be on its bye during Week 9, smack dab in the middle of the NFL calendar. Starting in Week 10 and through Week 15, they face their two toughest division opponents (Bengals and Ravens), and four 2025 playoff teams (Eagles, Broncos, Texans, Jaguars), easily the most difficult section of their schedule on paper.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should be well-rested heading into the toughest part of their season
Having a week to prepare before beginning that gauntlet could make-or-break the Steelers' chance at a playoff berth in 2026. The first eight weeks of the season feature many of their "weaker" opponents, which will hopefully set them up nicely heading into the Bye week.
If they can start 5-3 or 6-2 before getting that rest week, they wouldn't need to come out of those six weeks that follow unscathed just to have a shot at the playoffs. Going 3-3, or even 2-4, would still keep them above water heading into their final three games.
The first two games of that stretch—Week 10 @ Cincinnati and Week 11 @ Philadelphia—will set the tone for the rest of the Steelers' season, in particular. Pittsburgh has gone 7-3 over its last 10 games as the road team against the Bengals, so that game was already one that shouldn't be too scary on paper. However, the Steelers haven't beaten the Eagles on the road since 1965, so that would be quite the upset, to say the least.
If having their Bye in Week 9 can help them steal both of those games, that would be enough by itself to thank the NFL for setting up their schedule that way. It would have been easy to just stick them with a Week 8 Bye coming off their trip to Paris against the Saints in Week 7, but the schedule they got could be exactly what they needed.
