We've known the opponents the Pittsburgh Steelers would be facing during the 2026 season since early January, but fans still showed up in droves for the NFL schedule release. Steelers fans were itching to find out how many primetime games their favorite team would have, if they would be playing on any major holidays, and when they would be facing their AFC North rivals.
But after the Steelers' schedule reveal, new head coach Mike McCarthy might already be dreading a brutal schedule gauntlet he didn't see coming.
Things start off somewhat peacefully for the Steelers. McCarthy's team will host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1—an 8-9 team from last season. Pittsburgh is 7-0-1 all-time at home against the Falcons, and their quarterback situation is still a mess as Michael Penix Jr. recovers from an ACL injury. This is a favorable draw for the opening game.
Though the Steelers get a tough task with the New England Patriots in Week 2, the first half of their 2026 schedule includes a pair of games against the Cleveland Browns, a Paris contest against the New Orleans Saints, and games against the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But after the Week 9 bye, the competition quickly ramps up.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a brutal gauntlet of games from Week 10 to Week 15
From Week 10 to Week 15, in order, the Steelers will face the Bengals, Eagles, Broncos, Texans, Jaguars, and Ravens. Four of these opponents were playoff teams last year, while the other two—the Ravens and Bengals—were without their franchise quarterbacks for much of the season.
These six opponents combined for a 66-36 record in 2025, and several of them caught fire down the stretch. The Jaguars, for example, won eight straight games to close out the 2025 regular season. Meanwhile, the Texans—who thrashed the Steelers 30-6 in the Wild Card round—won nine straight games to close the year.
This intimidating schedule stretch means one thing: McCarthy and the Steelers must have a strong start to the season.
With eight games against manageable opponents before the bye, Pittsburgh must find a way to come out with a winning record in the first half of the season, perhaps 5-3 or even 6-2. Anything worse than this could spell doom for their 2026 season.
Even if Aaron Rodgers returns, we can bet that the Steelers will be underdogs in nearly all (if not all) six of these games. And this stretch doesn't even include a second contest against the Ravens in Baltimore for the Week 18 season finale.
The Steelers will be fortunate to escape the brutal Week 10-15 stretch, splitting games and finishing 3-3. But if they don't build enough steam in the first half of the season, going .500 during this stretch won't be enough to vault them into the playoffs.
There's no doubt that Coach McCarthy recognizes this Steelers schedule gauntlet, and he already knows how important it will be to start strong in 2026. How Pittsburgh performs in their week 10-15 stretch could make or break their season.
