Steelers emerge as a surprising fit for one Colts superstar

This seems unrealistic.

While the brunt of massive trades are likely done this offseason, writers are still speculating on deals. The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t been active on the trade market since adding Michael Pittman Jr., but that hasn’t stopped speculation from running rampant.

Garrett Podell from CBS Sports recently wrote about five superstars who could be traded. Surprisingly, he listed the Steelers as a landing spot for one of these names: Jonathan Taylor.

In his post, he claims that the Colts may struggle to keep up the pace they had last year. Daniel Jones is a question mark as he recovers from a torn Achilles, while Alec Pierce is struggling with an ankle injury.

This could lead to a bad start and a lackluster season. With Taylor entering the final year of his contract, the Colts may look to get something out of him before the deadline. In his post, Podell has the Steelers sending a third-round pick to acquire Taylor.

The Pittsburgh Steelers would be unwise to make a deal for Jonathan Taylor

The Steelers quietly have a strong running back room. Jaylen Warren is one of the most underrated backs in the league, while new signing Rico Dowdle is a hammer of a back. Beyond them, you have a slew of different flavors that fill out the depth chart well.

The hope is that Kaleb Johnson can rebound from a lackluster rookie season. Travis Homer is a great special teams player. Finally, Eli Heidenreich is a versatile chess piece who can wear a lot of hats.

In short, adding Taylor makes little sense.

I get that Taylor is a true top back, but running backs in general aren’t a great commodity anymore. A third-round pick is a costly investment for a running back for, at most, one season.

There is also a real chance that the Colts thrive this year if Jones gets back to form sooner than later. They were dynamic a year ago with him at the helm. They wouldn’t want to dump an asset ahead of a playoff run.

As for the Steelers, while they should be in the mix for a playoff spot, the odds of them actually competing are far-fetched. Even if they are, adding a running back feels like it wouldn’t make a huge difference.

While the odds of Taylor getting dealt if the Colts collapse aren’t unlikely, his coming to Pittsburgh feels like a pipe dream. This feels like fodder. I struggle to see a world where a deal like this materializes.
