Steelers fans should be dreading what the 2026 schedule revealed

The Steelers' road to success does not look as bright as many fans believed after a second look.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had their hands full this offseason. Trades during free agency and diligence during the NFL Draft helped Mike McCarthy add impact players to the roster for the upcoming campaign. Last week, the league office released the marching orders for the 2026 season.

It revealed a daunting gauntlet of games for a franchise hoping to remain relevant.

Based on last season’s opponent win percentages, the Steelers rank 19th in strength of schedule. This seemed like a gift from schedule crafters compared to years past. It’s the first time Pittsburgh has ranked outside the top ten in the category in quite some time. But it does not feel as if Pittsburgh has an easier route to success than before.

The road is filled with distractions and obstacles. Including a slew of back-to-back slugfests.

A Week 1 home opener against the Atlanta Falcons will gauge what Steelers fans should expect this season. It’s a formidable test against a hungry NFC South team and will provide our first look at McCarthy’s unit. From there, things get a little rough. Pittsburgh will travel to Boston to take on the New England Patriots, then face games against the Cleveland Browns and a grudge match against the Cincinnati Bengals before a Week 9 bye.

The slate of meaningful divisional play in the first half of the season adds weight to winnable games. I expect Pittsburgh to fare well, but costly mistakes could derail the season before it begins.

The Pittsburgh Steelers 2026 requires Mike McCarthy put his best foot foward

The start of the season is far from easy, but it's nothing compared to the second half of an understated gauntlet.

The real fun begins after Pittsburgh returns from the bye. Immediately, they will be met on Sunday Night by Cincinnati for their second AFC North meeting. It’s another meaningful game before the final quarter of the season. A loss could change the traction of a divisional title before postseason brackets are formed.

In the following week, McCarthy and his men fight for bragging rights in the state of Pennsylvania against Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

After the Steelers leave South Philadelphia, they will return to Acrisure to defend home field against the Denver Broncos in Week 12. The duel against Bo Nix and a stingy defense will prepare them for the opponents still waiting for their shot. The Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars will lead McCarthy’s unit into a Week 15 battle against the Baltimore Ravens.

They will see Lamar Jackson twice from Week 15 until the end of the season.

A new schedule release is a monumental part of preparation for most staff. It provides a fresh start for franchises looking to forget past turmoils. And it’s also the first step forward for Pittsburgh under McCarthy’s tenure. It's fair to acknowledge that Pittsburgh will have its hands full this season. But what true competitor would ask for an "easy" NFL schedule?

The Steelers must continue to use the offseason to prepare for the upcoming campaign. Because the road to the playoffs will not be easy. And surely everything will be earned. It forces McCarthy's unit to be focused and intentional throughout the campaign. If not, this can easily become a very long year.
