After many deemed the potential 2027 NFL Draft crop of quarterbacks as one of the best we could see this generation, most players are underperforming. Not only are they not living up to the hype, but many of the big names are starting to fall by the wayside. It could put the Pittsburgh Steelers in a tough situation. They clearly want to draft another quarterback, but it's not a given any longer.
Names like Arch Manning, Julian Sayin, Jayden Maiava, and other quarterbacks are struggling to maintain any draft relevance.
The good news for the Steelers is that some prospects are still doing well. All three of Trinidad Chambliss, Drew Mestemaker, and Darian Mensah have performed at a high level. You could potentially put Oregon quarterback Dante Moore in this mix, but he has been dealing with a nasty concussion for most of the season. It's not all bad news for this draft class, but they're not living up to expectations.
Pittsburgh Steelers 2027 NFL Draft quarterback hopes might be dashed after the season
Arch Manning, QB, Texas
Let's get the poster boy of this potential draft class out of the way first.
Not only has Arch Manning failed to live up to his draft projection, but he is on the verge of getting benched at Texas. He would fail to be the first overall pick if he left college after this season, and he might not even come close to being a first-round selection. Forget about the NFL Draft; Manning might have no other choice but to try to stick in the NCAA until he turns things around.
Dante Moore, QB, Oregon
It's not completely fair to mark Dante Moore as a failure as a quarterback because he's dealing with an injury. That being said, it's clearly a down season for Oregon, and that will affect Moore's draft stock moving forward. He would be someone the Steelers have interest come the spring. He has been a solid quarterback in college, but it would be nice to see him come back and play at a high level.
CJ Carr, QB, Notre Dame
Although he remains in the mix to be a first-round pick, teams looking to address this position should be careful. CJ Carr just hasn't looked great this season for Notre Dame. He was meant to take them to a National Championship, but he hasn't been able to elevate his game to a level that will get them there. Carr has a lot of skills to like at the position, but make no mistake, he is far from a finished product.
Julian Sayin, QB, Ohio State
He wasn't playing great, but Julian Sayin's draft stock just took another hit after suffering a shoulder injury this past weekend.
Ohio State looks off this season, and Sayin hasn't been playing at a level that should get NFL scouts excited. The Steelers would certainly be interested in a Buckeye quarterback, but his injury setback might force Sayin to return to Ohio State next year.
Sam Leavitt, QB, LSU
There were plenty of high hopes going into the season for LSU. Those dreams have come crashing down, and part of the reason is that Sam Leavitt failed to live up to the hype. He was never a top prospect ranked for the NFL Draft, but he was someone on the radar of many scouts. Leavitt is a talented player, but the biggest issue has been his adjusting to his higher-caliber opponents.
Jayden Maiava, QB, USC
He might not be the biggest loser of this group, but Jayden Maiava hasn't lived up to expectations this season. He is a fifth-year senior, yet he hasn't shown the ability to use that experience to lift his team to new heights. Maiava is producing decent numbers this season, but he has yet to have an explosive game against top-tier talent.
He could be a first-round pick, but that's far from a guarantee.
LaNorris Sellers, QB, South Carolina
We reach another quarterback prospect who might have no other choice but to return to college football rather than declare for the NFL Draft. LaNorris Sellers has a great athletic skill set both as a passer and runner, but his technique at the position is a mess. Sellers is someone who can be a Cam Newton type of player if he can develop further at the NCAA level before he jumps to the NFL.
