Steelers' initial roster has one major concern that paints an ugly picture

The Pittsburgh Steelers' initial 53-man roster is certainly something to behold. With many of the same key players back for the 2026 NFL Season, Pittsburgh might again be trending toward another 9-8 or 10-7 record.

That's been the ceiling for this team for years now, and even with a new coaching staff, there doesn't appear to be much more of a potential ceiling than what we've seen. A lot of this is attributed to the front office not being able to fix the quarterback position.

Sure, some of the Band-Aid options have been fine, but no one mistakes QB Aaron Rodgers for being one of the best in the league. Perhaps the future is Drew Allar, but we won't know for sure until 2027 at the absolute earliest. Beyond that, the roster-building just hasn't been that special, and when you take a look at one specific concern with the roster, it does paint quite the ugly picture for 2026.

Pittsburgh Steelers currently have the oldest roster in the NFL

As of 12:00 PM Eastern Time, before any other major moves could potentially happen, Pittsburgh sports the oldest roster in the NFL, according to Spotrac:

The Steelers join the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams as the oldest groups in the league at the moment. Pittsburgh and Atlanta are honestly in a similar spot - both teams have dealt with major QB concerns for years now, do sport legitimate talent here and there, but just do not have much of a ceiling in 2026.

As for the Rams, well, they're pretty self-explanatory - LA might just end up winning it all this year, as their roster is flat-out overwhelming. They recently added Pitt legend Aaron Donald back into the mix and have other high-end, All-Pro-caliber players like Myles Garrett, Matthew Stafford, and Puka Nacua, among a ton of other legitimate starters.

Pittsburgh, however, just can't really say the same thing - not only is Rodgers far removed from his prime seasons, but the same thing can be said for TJ Watt, who has been a cornerstone for nearly a decade. Cam Heyward is also 37 years old and may not have more than another competent year or two under his belt.

Other players like Chris Boswell, Cameron Johnston, Robert Tonyan, Christian Kuntz, Rayshawn Jenkins, Mason Rudolph, Jalen Ramsey, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Cole Holcomb are all at least 30 years old. Pittsburgh also has nine other players who are either 28 or 29 years old.

While older teams have won big before, it's not a sustainable way of winning, especially when you're a team like the Steelers and clearly aren't a contender. The Rams can get away with being older, as they're right in the middle of a Super Bowl window, for example.

This is a major, major issue that General Manager Omar Khan needs to attempt to fix in future NFL Drafts, which is where the foundation is set for Super Bowl contention. For the time being, he and others may simply have to hope that this season turns out better than what many think it will be.
