Steelers’ long-rumored WR target might not be off-limits for long

Will it finally happen?

Ever since Aaron Rodgers signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, there has been speculation over which former teammates he would try and bring with him, if any.

One of the most-rumored names, for a few months now, is Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs. And now, after the Packers just handed Christian Watson a one-year extension, the writing seems to be on the wall for Doubs' future in Green Bay.

This is no longer just a fun idea. At first, it might have been. But, even dating back just a couple of weeks ago, Rodgers was reported having asked about the status of Doubs in Green Bay. He was clearly interested in bringing an old friend to Pittsburgh.

"Rodgers called on Monday, one day before roster cuts; interestingly, he asked about the status of receiver Romeo Doubs," Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber wrote.

The Steelers could go get Romeo Doubs for next to nothing after latest Packers extension

With Watson still recovering from an injury last year, he has yet to take the field in 2025. But, the Packers made this extension happen in good faith. Watson's contract was set to expire after this year.

For those who might not be tracking, Doubs' contract is also up after this year. The two of them came into the league together as part of the Packers' 2022 draft class, with Watson being a high second-rounder and Doubs coming in the fourth.

Rodgers has historically had great things to say about Doubs, which makes it no surprise that he asked about the receiver's availability just a few weeks back. The Steelers saw Rodgers target Calvin Austin six times in Week 1 against the Jets, as the second-leading receiver next to DK Metcalf (seven targets).

The only other wide receiver to earn a target was Ben Skowronek who, in fact, was targeted a single time. That tells me the Steelers need more depth (as any other fan would continue to tell you).

Doubs could be had for a Day 3 pick, at this point, without question. The Packers just drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams while extending Watson. Extending Doubs seems highly unlikely at this point, and the league knows it.
