The Pittsburgh Steelers accomplished a great deal during free agency, but that does not mean their work should be finished. While they are unlikely to add any major names from the remaining free agent pool, they could still strengthen the roster by signing role players for depth.
These additions may not be starting caliber options, but they can provide valuable support across the depth chart and create some intriguing roster possibilities.
Attention is now turning to the NFL Draft in April as a key opportunity for the Steelers to further improve their roster. One position that continues to be discussed around the organization is wide receiver. Although they added Michael Pittman Jr. to pair with DK Metcalf, that move alone may not be sufficient. The offense could benefit from a dynamic playmaker who is elusive.
It makes sense for the Steelers to target another playmaker at the position in the draft, but they could also continue addressing that need through other avenues. While free agency no longer offers elite-level talent, Pittsburgh does not necessarily require a player of that caliber. JuJu Smith-Schuster could potentially return to the franchise that originally drafted him.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should consider signing WR JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency
When evaluating the current wide receiver group, Pittsburgh has DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Roman Wilson, and Ben Skowronek established on the roster. Wilson, a third-round pick, is approaching bust territory after struggling to secure a consistent role in the offense. Skowronek contributed with a few receptions last season, but his primary value comes on special teams.
With Metcalf and Pittman Jr. standing as the only reliable receivers, the depth behind them remains a concern.
Smith-Schuster will turn 30 in November and is someone who can play up and down the lineup. If Metcalf or Pittman Jr. suffer an injury, the free agent receiver could start games when needed. He could also help take pressure off of any high-round draft pick the Steelers might bring into the building. JuJu is a former fan favorite who would be a safe insurance to add to the roster for this year.
Signing Smith-Schuster could be sound business for the team. He would not be expensive to bring back. He has proven to be a tough, physical player who is willing to block, which is an important trait for any role player added to the roster. Additionally, the level of experience JuJu brings to the table is another compelling reason for the Steelers to consider a reunion.
Since departing Pittsburgh during free agency in 2022, his career has not reached the same heights as before, but he has still put together a solid body of work.
He won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs and has continued to post respectable production. While Smith-Schuster is no longer the player he was early in his career with the Steelers, he remains a reliable contributor who produces at a reasonable level.
