It's late for a team to fire its general manager, but that's exactly what the Minnesota Vikings did. They let go of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who held the role from 2022 to 2025 (technically 2026, but barely). With a new opening in the NFL available, the Pittsburgh Steelers could witness their front office get poached. Andy Weidl, the team’s assistant general manager, has drawn rumored interest from prior vacancies.

With Minnesota’s position now open, it would not be surprising if Weidl earns an interview and consideration for the role. He could become a favorite after countless interviews over the years, his most recent for the Atlanta Falcons job. Although he has yet to be hired as a general manager, the Steelers assistant appears poised for a promotion in the near future.

According to the Athletics' Alec Lewis, Weidl should be considered on a short list of candidates to become the Vikings' next general manager.

Most of Steelers Nation should shudder at that thought, but it's something they must prepare for. He is a known commodity around the NFL, and for good reason. The good news is that this hiring process might wait to fill the vacancy until after the NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers AGM Andy Weidl could be top candidate for Vikings new vacancy

Pittsburgh hasn't been shy with its actions regarding its attempt to mirror the success of the Philadelphia Eagles. That is one of the top reasons why they brought Weidl aboard. They wanted to rebuild their trenches and return to a brutal team to play against. For the most part, teams around the NFL are attempting to do the same. They all want to tap into that Eagles' success moving forward.

Lewis wrote in his article, "The Vikings would love to replicate the Philadelphia Eagles’ recent success. Weidl spent six seasons with Philadelphia under general manager Howie Roseman."

If the Vikings are gunning to become a similar operation as Philadelphia, Weidl could be their top choice. He has shown he likes to invest in the trenches and follow the lead of his tutor, Howie Roseman. It's a strong chain of general managers who have evolved out of the Eagles organization.

After successful drafts led by Weidl and Omar Khan, the Steelers could lose their assistant GM.

While Weidl failed to earn the job with the Falcons, it doesn't mean he will stay with the Steelers. He is from Pittsburgh, but if a top job comes calling, he would be crazy not to take it. The Vikings' job is enticing, and it could be one of the better openings in recent memory. That connection with the Eagles and strong draft results with the Steelers could make Weidl a finalist for this position.

"Atlanta chose another former Eagles executive, Ian Cunningham, underscoring the league’s respect for what Philadelphia’s front office has done," Lewis mentioned.

It would not be surprising if Weidl receives an interview for the vacancy, as he has a legitimate chance to land his first general manager role.

Minnesota does not appear to be in a rush and is expected to wait until after the NFL Draft to make a hire. The Vikings have a good job, and their willingness to wait could help Pittsburgh. Losing Weidl before the draft process is complete could destroy their plans this year.
