With each passing week, there seems to be more disappointment circulating around the potential 2027 NFL Draft crop of quarterback prospects. For one reason or another, only a select few have been able to live up to the hype that the collective had going into the college season. This could ultimately be bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers could use someone to succeed Aaron Rodgers from the draft, but with how disappointing the QB prospects have been, there's no guarantee they will find a quality option in the 2027 NFL Draft. This was further on display in the Ole Miss-Texas game over the weekend.
Scouts from around the NFL have continued to surface around college football weekends, and the Steelers just got a close-up look at two potential high-profile quarterbacks. Both Trinidad Chambliss and Arch Manning are projected as high draft choices in the upcoming event, but after their head-to-head showdown, that thought process might change. Neither had good games.
It's best to know how a signal caller performs when the lights are the brightest, and sadly for both Chambliss and Manning, things didn't go to plan. Yes, the Texas Longhorns emerged with a victory, but it wasn't necessarily because their once-heralded quarterback got them there.
This latest setback for the upcoming draft-eligible gunslingers continues to show this group might be too overhyped.
Pittsburgh Steelers should be disappointed by the Trinidad Chambliss and Arch Manning showdown
Out of the two prospects, it's clear that Trinidad Chambliss has performed at a much higher level than Arch Manning to this point in the season. Although Chambliss is older and has more experience, Manning carried the higher draft grade going into the year.
Now, with a mountain of setbacks for Manning, he's been on the brink of getting benched and potentially returning to college football next season if he can't turn things around in a hurry.
Although this battle was a slight setback for Chambliss, it's obvious that he's produced a stronger season than Manning. Although the Ole Miss signal caller threw three interceptions in this one, he's still producing big numbers that should make him one of the first quarterbacks to come off the board when the NFL Draft arrives. He should still be on the Steelers' radar as the calendar progresses.
When it comes to Manning, he's not doing himself any favors.
Texas continues to struggle in many aspects, resulting from his poor quarterback play. He threw two more interceptions during this contest, bringing his season total to seven. It's been a disaster for Arch, and the once-expected No. 1 draft pick might not only struggle to land that honor, but he might also struggle to get to the NFL in 2027.
Chambliss was clearly performing as the better of the two quarterback prospects going into this game. It was No. 9 Ole Miss taking on the No. 19 Longhorns. It was a close contest, but Texas emerged with a 34-27 victory that saved their disappointing campaign.
Neither quarterback came out of this one raising their draft stock, which should be a red flag for a soon-to-be quarterback-needy team like the Pittsburgh Steelers.
