Steelers' playoff hopes could soar or sink after Browns showdown

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a divisional game against the Cleveland Browns, and though we've not yet reached the halfway mark of the 2026 season, this AFC North matchup will have massive playoff implications.

To the surprise of almost everyone (and maybe even most Browns fans), Cleveland currently sits atop the division with a 5-2 record. Perhaps most importantly, they are 2-0 in the AFC North and currently hold tiebreakers over both the Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens if the season were to end today.

While the Browns are hardly favorites to earn the division crown by the end of the season, their Week 8 matchup could cause the Steelers' playoff odds to either skyrocket or plummet entering their mid-season bye.

Pittsburgh Steelers' playoff chances will be altered heavily based on their Week 8 outcome against the Cleveland Browns

You'd think that, with a 5-2 record, the Steelers are well on their way to a playoff berth. But that's simply not the case. According to The Athletic's latest 2026 playoff projections, Mike McCarthy's team currently has just a 58 percent chance of cashing their ticket to the tournament.

This is largely because nine teams in the AFC are currently 4-3 or better. Outside of the four projected division winners, if the season ended now, the Steelers are in the Wild Card hunt with the Broncos (5-2), Bengals (4-2), Patriots (4-3), and Ravens (4-3).

But here's where things really start to get messy.

If the Steelers lose at home against the Browns this week, they would drop to 5-3. Yet, their odds of making the playoffs would sink to just 40%. This includes just an 8% chance of winning the division and a 1% chance of earning the lone first-round bye as the top seed in the AFC.

However, if the Steelers win at Acrisure Stadium this week, their playoff odds will jump 10 points from 58% to 68%, with a respectable 23% chance to win the division crown and a 5% chance to be the No. 1 seed.

Even if the Steelers beat the Browns and lose against the Cincinnati Bengals following their Week 9 bye, McCarthy's team would still have a 61% chance to crack the postseason. But losing this Sunday would be catastrophic for several reasons.

The most important reason is the difference in divisional records.

The Steelers need to beat the Browns in Week 8 for playoff tiebreaker purposes

If Pittsburgh falls to Cleveland in Week 8, they will be 1-2 against the AFC North, while the Browns would be a perfect 3-0. This would also mean that if the Steelers and Browns were to finish with the same record at the end of the season (let's call it 10-7), Cleveland would officially hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Pittsburgh for a playoff spot.

The other scenario that could happen by the end of the season with a Steelers loss this week is that the Ravens or Bengals could hold a tiebreaker over Pittsburgh. Let's say the Browns fall off in the second half of the year (as many expect them to), and let's say the Steelers split with both the Ravens and Bengals this season.

In this scenario, if Pittsburgh and Baltimore or Cincinnati were to finish with the same record and are both 1-1 in their head-to-head matchups, the next playoff tiebreaker is division record. So the Steelers falling to 1-2 in the AFC North after Week 8 would be a bad sign.

Realistically, earning a playoff spot in a crowded division—and with three AFC North opponents in the hunt—will likely require the Steelers to go no worse than 3-3 and maybe even 4-2 within their own division.

We never want to make too much out of a single game, but the outcome of the Steelers-Browns matchup this week will have seismic implications for AFC North playoff odds.
