Just as the Pittsburgh Steelers are working through uncertainty at quarterback, a new development has emerged. Controversial Texas Tech prospect Brendan Sorsby has announced he will enter the NFL’s supplemental draft, where he is expected to be selected, possibly with a high pick. His availability could introduce a new layer of complexity to the Steelers’ long-term plans at the position.

If Pittsburgh selects Sorsby in the supplemental draft, it would signal just how eager the organization is to find a true franchise quarterback.

The team already has two young passers in Will Howard and Drew Allar, but Sorsby may offer the highest upside of the group. Adding him would create significant competition and could reshape the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart, potentially putting current roster spots at risk.

Pittsburgh Steelers potential drafting of Brendan Sorsby would alter quarterback depth chart

Staying: Aaron Rodgers

Even if the Steelers were to draft Brendan Sorsby, Aaron Rodgers’ starting role should not be considered at risk. Pittsburgh wants the future Hall of Famer in the building to help mentor its younger quarterbacks, and it would be beneficial for Sorsby to develop behind him.

However, adding Sorsby would introduce legitimate competition within the quarterback room, something Rodgers is not currently facing.

Probably gone: Mason Rudolph

By bringing in Sorsby, there would be little reason for the Steelers to keep Mason Rudolph on the roster. The only scenario in which the longtime backup remains with the team would be if he transitions to the practice squad after final cuts. Another possibility is if the veteran manages to outperform Will Howard and secure the potential fourth spot on the depth chart.

Staying: Drew Allar

Pittsburgh used a third-round pick on Drew Allar, so he is firmly expected to make the roster this season.

He is unlikely to see game action, and it is fair to wonder whether the Steelers would have made that selection had they known Brendan Sorsby would become available. Still, Allar is a strong candidate to benefit from developing behind Aaron Rodgers, and there is no reason for the organization to move on from him anytime soon.

On the bubble: Will Howard

The quarterback who would be affected most by the addition of Sorsby in the Supplemental Draft is Will Howard. While he has received strong praise within the Steelers organization, prospects like Brendan Sorsby do not come around often. Howard, a former sixth-round pick, has yet to take an NFL snap.

Sorsby's potential arrival could quickly cool the hype surrounding Howard in Pittsburgh.

Would stay: Brendan Sorsby

It is clear that if the Steelers were to draft Brendan Sorsby, he would have a spot on the roster. The real question is whether Pittsburgh would carry four quarterbacks or if Sorsby could earn the backup role and push the team to keep just three at the position. While selecting Sorsby would come with some risk, passing on a prospect with his potential in this kind of situation would be difficult.
