Improving the odds for a competitive season has been the focus of the Pittsburgh Steelers' front office. And it does not seem like Omar Khan plans on breaking stride anytime soon.

On Wednesday, the franchise agreed to a four-year, $42 million contract extension with tight end Darnell Washington. The deal includes $21 million in guaranteed money. It's a cost-effective investment in a player whose ceiling is still rising. I believe it is the perfect motivation for a key X-factor in Mike McCarthy’s developing offense.

There are a plethora of reasons to love Pittsburgh’s decision to extend Washington. The most obvious is his size. The former third-round pick has a six-foot-seven frame and moves like a locomotive once he gets downhill. His girth is intimidating for opposing defenders, especially when he is involved in yards-after-catch situations.

Last season, Washington averaged 11.7 yards per reception in 16 games. It shows he is more than a big body standing near the line of scrimmage. He punished defenders after the catch for attempting to stop his momentum. In return, it helped Pittsburgh’s offense find traction in slippery situations.

That is exactly why this extension makes sense.

Washington is not a traditional tight end. He is a walking mismatch who can impact the game without needing 10 targets every Sunday. His blocking gives Pittsburgh an extra offensive lineman in heavy packages. Plus, receiving ability forces linebackers and safeties to respect him in the passing game. This combination is irreplaceable for an offense trying to build a physical identity.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are paying the perfect price for Darnell Washington

There is no doubt that Washington is an asset, but expectations must rise with a heavier contract.

His utilization has gradually increased since he entered the league in 2023. Now, his presence should not be a second thought. Through his young career, Washington has totaled 57 receptions, 625 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. On paper, those numbers scream unproductive and underwhelming. But the film tells a different tale.

When Pittsburgh has unleashed its oversized tight end, the offense has seen immediate results.

Washington became a reliable target for Aaron Rodgers and helped expand the run-game-heavy formations that make the Steelers dangerous. He does the dirty work, absorbs contact, creates movement, and still has enough athletic ability to sneak behind defenders when they forget about him.

But there's more work to be done.

I do not believe Washington will suddenly become a 1,000-yard receiver. That is not his game, and it does not need to be. But I do expect his progression to continue at a higher rate. A player earning $10.5 million per season should not disappear for long stretches. He must become a weekly part of the offensive script.

Mike McCarthy has a chance to unlock a new level of dominance in Washington. Not by turning him into something he is not, but by leaning into what makes him different.

This extension is more than a financial commitment; it is a message. Pittsburgh believes Darnell Washington can be a tone-setter for its offense. And if he continues developing, that belief could help the Steelers build one of the most physically demanding units in football.
