After a strong preseason from several of their younger receivers, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to cut ties with veteran wideout Robert Woods. It was only briefly, however, as Woods returned as one of their practice squad signings just days later.
Despite a disappointing summer from the former 1,000-yard receiver, having him be available to be brought up from the practice squad in the event of injury or poor play made sense for both sides. Woods is no longer an impact on offense, with just 629 yards over the last two seasons.
Despite his failure to make the Steelers roster, Ian Rapoport reported that his release came at his own request, instead only wanting to continue his career if it meant being on a 53-man roster. Only time will tell if he gets that opportunity, but it means Pittsburgh could be on the lookout for another veteran presence at receiver.
Robert Woods's release could lead to another receiver move from the Pittsburgh Steelers
As things stand, it seems that the Steelers are comfortable heading into 2025 with their receiver room as is. The emergence of 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson and the strong summer from Scotty Miller made Woods expendable, but it would have been nice to have his experience and presence in the locker room.
Now, with the season just days from kicking off, time is running out for GM Omar Khan if he plans on making a move that will be impactful during the start of the season. With Gabe Davis already having returned to the Buffalo Bills, his options are limited on the open market.
The long-discussed return of Tyler Boyd to Pittsburgh after a great college career here could make sense, but he didn't look any more useful on the field last year than Woods was for Houston a year ago.
The trade market seems to be cold right now as well, but Khan could keep his eye on potential upgrades all the way up through the trade deadline.
Overall, Woods asking for his release isn't likely to make a huge impact on the Steelers this season, but it may lead to a move that does. Either way, I wish Woods the best as he tries to continue his career elsewhere.
