Steelers fail to fix WR problem but have surprising trade options left

Until something materializes, the trade rumors will not end anytime soon.

With the 53-man roster set, the Pittsburgh Steelers have disappointed parts of their fanbase. The team was expected to add one or two players from outside the organization to strengthen their depth chart. After an up-and-down preseason process, it seemed clear that the Steelers would explore options during roster cuts and the trade block to upgrade the receiver position.

Neither of those scenarios unfolded, and Pittsburgh remains in the same position it has been in since trading George Pickens.

This is not the end of the line for the trade rumors that have followed Omar Khan since he took over as General Manager. The team will evaluate Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III in expanded offensive roles, but if they fail to deliver, trade rumors are likely to intensify.

Pittsburgh Steelers remain in the thick of trade rumors surrounding receivers

Jakobi Meyers, Las Vegas Raiders

After he requested a trade, the connection between Pittsburgh and Jakobi Meyers has grown at a rapid pace. It makes sense on paper for the Steelers to want him, but the Las Vegas Raiders seem in no rush to trade the playmaker. He is a pending free agent after the season, and the Raiders hope they return to winning football games this year before considering selling assets.

Meyers would be a perfect addition to the Steelers' offense, but it might have to wait until the trade deadline. Las Vegas must know what type of team they have before they consider moving their top receiver. Acquiring Meyers leading up to the deadline shouldn't cost too much. He would be a rental piece who could be a massive get for Pittsburgh to complete their offensive arsenal.

Alec Pierce, Indianapolis Colts

The Raiders might outperform expectations, but the Indianapolis Colts are likely to struggle. With that in mind, they plan to see how the season unfolds with Daniel Jones at quarterback before making any decisions to sell. Alec Pierce has lost ground on the depth chart throughout the preseason process, and he could be someone the Steelers might be able to pry away soon.

Pierce is someone Pittsburgh expressed a lot of pre-draft interest in when he was coming out of the 20223 NFL Draft.

He is a big target who has produced quality numbers with the Colts. The 25-year-old is a pending free agent, but since he remains young, the Steelers could consider an extension. Pierce would be a great addition now, but they could always circle back near the deadline.

Allen Lazard, New York Jets

Pittsburgh could always keep its tabs on former Aaron Rodgers teammate Allen Lazard. The veteran receiver had trade rumors pop up earlier in the offseason, but nothing materialized. If the New York Jets struggle out of the gate, they could always be active before the trade deadline.

Lazard has played almost his entire career with Rodgers as his quarterback, and there is familiarity there.

If the Steelers are looking for someone who can quickly adapt and understand how Rodgers operates, they could always add Lazard through a trade. The veteran playmaker isn't as talented as Pierce or Meyers, but he could help boost the receiver position if Wilson or Austin struggles. He might not be at the top of the list, but Lazard could be an option to help stabilize the position.
