Steelers could miss out on another key WR target as 49ers swoop in

San Francisco might steal another WR straight out of their hands.

According to Tom Pelissero, the New England Patriots are officially cutting veteran receiver Kendrick Bourne. The top playmaker for their offense asked for his release, and they granted his wish less than 24 hours after making their 53-man roster. He isn't a superstar at his position, but Bourne is a serviceable receiver who could help the Pittsburgh Steelers if they address their need.

Soon after Pelissero's post on X was released, Matt Maiocco relayed that he believes the San Francisco 49ers are interested in Bourne. According to his post, "The 49ers have 'high interest' in bringing back WR Kendrick Bourne, source says, after he gets his release from the Patriots."

It would make sense for San Francisco to have an interest in a potential reunion with their former receiver. He signed a massive contract to join the Patriots in March of 2021. He never produced at the level the Patriots had dreamed of when he signed, so a divorce always seemed apparent. Bourne is now available, but the Steelers must get ahead of schedule if they want him.

After the 49ers signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling earlier in the day, it would be shocking to see them add another receiver. They would be stealing another potential upgrade right out of Pittsburgh's clutches.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could lose Kendrick Bourne to the 49ers if they don't hurry

In the days leading up to the construction of their 53-man roster, it has become increasingly clear that the Steelers are exploring every possible avenue to upgrade their offense.

They would love to land a quality player to help upgrade their receiving corps. That might not be realistic, but adding Bourne could help calm their worries. Though not elite, he is a dependable and experienced choice.

Reports surfaced that Pittsburgh held interest in signing Valdes-Scantling before he signed with the 49ers. San Francisco has faced a series of injuries to its receiving corps, fueling widespread speculation. They might've just added Valdes-Scantling, but that won't rule them out from potentially landing a reunion with Bourne after being separated for four years.

Neither Valdes-Scantling nor Bourne is the top-tier weapon that most of Steelers Nation is holding their breath for.

Pittsburgh would love a headlining name to land on the roster before Week 1 of the regular season. Acquiring a top talent at this point in the year is unlikely, and guys like Bourne would be the most plausible outcomes. So everyone should calm their expectations.

The Steelers have DK Metcalf and Roman Wilson scheduled to be their top targets at receiver, with Calvin Austin III, Ben Skowronek, and Scotty Miller waiting in the wings.

Pittsburgh should target Bourne and gauge his interest in joining their team. Given his past ties to the 49ers, it’s easy to see him favoring San Francisco over Pittsburgh, but the Steelers should still make every effort to sign him.
