In a new bombshell interview, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers might've unearthed some shocking plans for him this Summer. Not only will he be working at training camp with the rest of the gunslingers on the depth chart, but he might be playing a lot this preseason. According to a new article by the Athletics' Michael Silver, the team could be taking a massive risk.
With Mike McCarthy as the head coach of the team, it's unknown how he will handle snaps this preseason when it comes to his starters. His predecessor, Mike Tomlin, remained cautious with putting his starters on the field during the preseason, worried about them suffering a terrible injury.
It doesn't seem that McCarthy holds the same concerns, including for his star signal caller.
Silver quoted Rodgers in his report, "He (wants me out there) 30 or 40 plays," Rodgers said, expressing surprise. "I said, 'Mike, if you want me to play, I'll play.' I'm not saying I want to do it. But if he wants me to, I will."
This could become a massive headline in the coming weeks, especially after Aaron Rodgers seemed to voice his displeasure with the idea. It's understandable for the future Hall of Famer to accept those snaps if they come his way, but voicing his reasons to go against playing in the preseason is just as reasonable.
Taking the risk of him suffering a season-ending injury during the preseason is foolish.
Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike McCarthy could ruin the team's season with Aaron Rodgers miscalculation
In reality, it won't be the end of the world if Aaron Rodgers plays a small number of snaps this preseason. With that said, if Mike McCarthy's original plan for Rodgers to play significant time this preseason comes to pass, then it could heighten tensions within Steelers Nation. No matter if you like Rodgers or not as the starting quarterback, he gives them their best shot at winning.
Any sort of risk you take during the preseason by playing your starters is not a good idea, and it only becomes inflated when you are talking about a 42-year-old quarterback.
You should know what you are getting from Rodgers at this stage in his career. He is a game manager who is on the back end of his deteriorating skill set. There should be little need for him to see a lot of snaps during the preseason, if any.
Back in the day, it was common for starters to play minutes during preseason action, but that is no longer the case. The higher a player is paid, the less time they will experience during the preseason. Mike McCarthy could make his first fatal mistake as the Steelers head coach if he truly wants Aaron Rodgers to play meaningless snaps and risk injury.
If Pittsburgh were to send Rodgers out onto the field this preseason and witness him suffer a season-ending injury, they could lose countless games this year.
Like it or not, he is their only hope at the quarterback position to keep their offense at a high enough level to make the postseason. Risking the veterans' health to play pointless in-game action is too much of a risk to take.
