With the NFL trade deadline nearing on November 4, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in a tough spot. They're coming off two backbreaking losses and sit with a 4-3 record. They remain at the top of their division standings, but with recent performances and a tough schedule ahead, there is little hope on the horizon. The Steelers' defense continues to struggle, and it's only going to get worse.
Pittsburgh made a gamble when it traded away Minkah Fitzpatrick. That roll of dice hasn't paid off yet this season, as the safety position is one of the weakest on defense. DeShon Elliott was their best player at the position, but he is out for the long term after leaving the Packers game early. Depth is thin at the safety spot, and it might be time to hit the panic button.
In light of their recent struggles, the Steelers should exercise caution regarding the trade compensation they’re prepared to offer.
Their issues on defense should prompt them to improve the team, but there are few options available. One choice sticks out like a sore thumb, and that is free agent Justin Simmons. He has been linked to the team in the past, and it could be his time.
Pittsburgh Steelers should sign free agent Justin Simmons to replace DeShon Elliott
Mike Tomlin noted during his Week 9 presser that DeShon Elliott is week-to-week, but that means he could still miss an extended period of action. The Steelers will rely on Chuck Clark, Juan Thornhill, and Jabrill Peppers for now. That group of safeties played terribly against Green Bay, and it wouldn't shock anyone to see them struggle against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9 of the season.

Simmon is a former All-Pro defensive back who remains a free agent. It is surprising to see him still available on the open market. It would take some research to make an official contract offer to the veteran. He hasn't played a second of football since last season, so you must check to see what kind of shape he is in. Once signed, it would take a while for him to get on a moving train.
The Steelers desperately need a fresh breath of air in the secondary.
Pittsburgh has been abused every time they face a solid starting quarterback this year. Elliott wasn't playing his best, but he was a great communicator and held down the fort at the safety position. Simmons probably isn't the same player he once was, but he would be an upgrade over Peppers, Thornhill, and Clark.
The free agent played for the Atlanta Falcons last year, starting 16 games and producing solid numbers of two interceptions and 62 combined tackles. Before that, he had a terrific eight-year career with the Denver Broncos, where he produced elite numbers. Simmons has primarily started games at free safety, but his versatility could benefit the Steelers.
