With Roman Wilson out with injury following an awkward fall on a jet sweep at training camp, the Steeler's depth at receiver plummets further.

Free agency might not be the best option for Pittsburgh to upgrade at receiver, but it might be the best choice for now. There are some quality names still searching for an opportunity despite training camps around the NFL in full swing. For one reason or another, these players haven't been able to land a job.

When you look at the current makeup of the Steelers depth chart, there are clear upgrades out there who could help them.

Even if the black and gold were willing to get a top receiver via trade, there are still issues at receiver when it comes to depth. If they could solve both of those problems, one by signing a free agent, and the other via trade, then they could be in good shape. All of this is a shame as Wilson was enjoying a quality camp before his injury sidelined him.

Hunter Renfrow

It wasn't long ago that Hunter Renfrow was considered one of the top slot receivers in the NFL.

Everyone is looking for the Steelers to upgrade their outside receiver spot, but they could use some help at the slot position too. Renfrow was cut from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason and continues to try to find work as a free agent. Wilson was getting most of his chances in the slot, so someone like Renfrow would make a ton of sense.

He has a ton of starting experience and would provide both a starting option and a depth choice for the Steelers.

Michael Thomas

Perhaps one of the most notable free agents out there is none other than Michael Thomas.

The one-time superstar for the New Orleans Saints looks like he might be on the downward swing of his career. He is still only 31 years old, so he might have some quality play left. The main issue that continues to rear its ugly head towards Thomas has been injuries. If he can stay healthy, then the Steelers will have a proven veteran who can play on the outside.

If Thomas would be willing to earn a starting spot or be comfortable in a depth role then he could be a quality get for Pittsburgh.

Russell Gage

Russell Gage hasn't played a regular season game since 2022 after suffering an injury.

It knocked him out for a while, but he returned last year with Tampa Bay in their training camp. He suffered a season-ending injury at camp. He remains a free agent looking for a chance. One of the biggest hurdles with Gage will be if he is healthy enough to play. If he is, then he could be a fantastic signing for the Steelers.

He has played both in the slot and on the outside at the receiver position throughout his career. Add in the fact he has a lot of starting experience, and that's what the Steelers are searching for.
