Ben Roethlisberger gets brutally honest about Steelers QB situation
By Ryan Heckman
Much has been made in regards to the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation over the past several weeks, but now that the regular season is in full swing, the speculating is over
As it stands, this is Justin Fields' job to lose.
The Steelers go into Week 3 with a record of 2-0, riding a strong defense and behind a quarterback that has yet to turn the football over. Fields is playing efficient football, overall, completing almost 70 percent of his passes through two games.
He has managed the game well while also giving the Steelers a lift on the ground with 84 rushing yards in two starts. It is safe to say head coach Mike Tomlin is correct in his assessment of Fields, right now. He has the job and the Steelers are preparing as though he's keeping the job, for now.
Wednesday, Tomlin told the media that, while hypotheticals are a "waste of time," the team is readying themselves around Fields for the coming game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
So, as has been the question each week thus far, what happens if Fields yet again plays well and against one of the better defenses through two weeks? If you were to ask former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Tomlin should not be making any changes.
"To me, if Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin ... I think that he has earned and deserves the right to stay there," the Super Bowl champion said on his podcast recently.
More Steelers news:
“You could still change it up now. Mike could go back to Russ. It’s only two games in,” the quarterback went on. But, he also noted that this league is all about winning football games, period.
"I didn’t always put up big numbers, but I prided myself on getting wins, and that’s what you’re supposed to do as a quarterback: You’re supposed to win football games," he said.
Ben Roethlisberger is right about Justin Fields keeping the starting job
This shouldn't be all that complicated, if we're being honest. It's an unfortunate situation that Russell Wilson has found himself in, dealing with a longstanding calf injury. But, it's also the nature of the game. These things happen.
When Wilson is healthy and back to 100 percent, the Steelers simply need to keep him as Fields' backup. There is plenty to be said about continuity. If the Steelers are a winning football team with Fields under center, why on earth go a different direction?
The offense hardly has any consistent practice time with Wilson under center, and obviously has no real regular season experience with him thus far. As they say, if you've got a good thing going, why change?
If Fields should suffer an injury or begin to struggle for multiple games in a row, then it would make sense to go back to Wilson. However, taking the unnecessary gamble makes zero sense as of right now.
Roethlisberger is right on the money, here.
