After days of anxiously awaiting an outcome in the Brandon Aiyuk trade saga, we received an update... and the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly close to landing the top-flight wide receiver.
On August 13, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport offered an update. The NFL insider reported that the Steelers and 49ers have come to an agreement on a deal to trade Aiyuk to Pittsburgh. Rapoport also noted that Pittsburgh is in a good place when it comes to Aiyuk's contract situation.
If John Lynch and the 49ers give the final sign-off, it's a done deal.
This is everything fans were hoping to hear. The 49ers were reportedly displeased with the Steelers, as they thought Pittsburgh was lowballing them in their offer.
Steelers are closer than ever to executing a trade for Brandon Aiyuk
At this point, we don't know what the compensation will look like in a potential deal. After originally asking for a first-round pick early in the offseason, the Niners have come down on the asking price. A recent report suggests San Francisco is trying to get a second and third-round pick out of Aiyuk in addition to a player from the Steelers who could help them right away.
This is where the stalemate ensued. The Steelers treat each season like they are in a Super Bowl window, and Mike Tomlin -- who has a final say in everything that goes on around the organization -- doesn't want to part with pieces that can help his team win football games in 2024.
Adding Aiyuk to the Steelers roster would give quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields another dynamic threat in the passing game to pair with spectacular second-year receiver, George Pickens.
While we don't know for sure when (or if) this trade will be finalized, everything seems to be in order as the two sides have reached an agreement on the terms of the deal. At this point, we are simply waiting for the 49ers to give the thumbs up to submit the paperwork to the league. Stay tuned!
