Everyone knows about the quality of play that Justin Fields has shown during his start as the Steelers quarterback. Everyone thought the Steelers would start Russell Wilson this season, but he has been out with a calf injury. Wilson could be back sometime before the trade deadline hits on November 5. If he is healthy and doesn't want a backup job, he could get traded.

Mike Tomlin gave Wilson his word that he would have a good shot at being the Steelers starter this year. That was a long time ago, and Fields has shown that he can be reliable enough to win football games as the quarterback. Unless Fields declines at a rapid rate and losing becomes a habit, it is going to be a tough situation for Wilson. He would likely have to be a backup.

Having Wilson on the roster provides stability and someone you can turn to if Fields starts to flop. There are teams out there who could use some help at quarterback and might look at the trade market.

If Wilson refuses to be the backup to Fields, then he could seek a trade out of Pittsburgh. Most of this scenario will depend on how Fields plays and if Wilson can fully heal his calf.

Russell Wilson could be perfect trade bait for the Pittsburgh Steelers

Adam Schefter was on the Pat McAfee show recently and described how the Miami Dolphins could be on the hunt for a quarterback. Their star signal caller Tua Tagovailoa remains out with a concussion, and his availability for the remainder of the season is under question. If he misses the rest of the campaign, then the Dolphins could be one of the worst teams in football.

Schefter mentioned how teams with a couple of starting options at quarterback could be trade targets for the Dolphins if he ran the team. He laid out a couple of different options that could be legit trade targets for Miami.

None of them would likely cost an arm and a leg to acquire, but Pittsburgh would have plenty of leverage in trade talks.

"I'd call Denver and ask, 'What do you want for Zach Wilson?'," Adam Schefter urged on NFL on ESPN. "I would call Pittsburgh and ask, 'What they would want for Russell Wilson'? And I would call Cleveland and ask, 'What would you want for Dorian Thompson-Robinson?'"

Russell Wilson is the biggest name listed here by Schefter. It is unknown if the Steelers would be willing to trade the veteran quarterback before the deadline hits in November. He is a smart player and someone who seems to be getting along in the locker room. If Pittsburgh were to trade Wilson, it would be a surprising move that would need a fair return coming back the other way.

Miami doesn't want to punt on the season, but they might not have any other choice. A lot of Wilson's future with the Steelers will be determined by the play of Fields. It could also depend on if Wilson is willing to accept the backup duties again. If he wants a trade from the Steelers, then a deal with the Dolphins would make sense. Don't expect Pittsburgh to give him up for pennies on the dollar though.
