Edge defenders (4):

Steelers roster prediction: T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, Quincy Roche

For some reason or another, the Steelers always seem to go with four edge defenders -- no more and no less. This year, however, it's hard to even find a fourth player deserving of a roster spot. Obviously, T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith are locks to make the team. Then it gets interesting.

The Steelers reportedly view rookie Nick Herbig as an 'outside linebacker'. This means that he will be playing the 'edge' role. With a 6'2'', 240-pound frame with short arms, I have my doubts that he can hold up here full-time, and some believe he should be an off-ball linebacker in the NFL.

Regardless, I have Herbig claiming the third spot here. He will no doubt earn a roster sport thanks to his grit and willingness to play special teams. This leaves one more job opening.

For the final edge defender spot on the roster, I have Pittsburgh going with Quincy Roche for the time being, but I don't feel confident about this at all. The Steelers may want to go with a player who has more special teams ability. Roche has already been cut from the team once, and I wouldn't be surprised if they cut him loose again in 2023.
