According to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been active on the scouting trail to start the college football season. That is not uncommon for any NFL team, but they have been notably present for many potential top quarterbacks in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. Many might think it is too early to be talking about the draft, but the Steelers have it circled on their calendar.
With Justin Fields winning games for the Steelers, Russell Wilson has been out of the lineup with less urgency to return from his calf injury. Pittsburgh knows that it's possible neither Fields nor Wilson could be their quarterback of the future. One of them will have to prove their worth of that crowning, but with their early scouting reports, it seems like the Steelers could move on quickly.
Even if Fields or Wilson can prove to be the starting quarterback of the team moving forward, it is likely the organization will have to draft one or two players for the position. Either that or it could be a complete rehaul of the quarterback room just like what happened this past offseason.
Get ready Pittsburgh; these next few months of quarterback play will change the trajectory of the franchise.
Steelers are monitoring some top quarterbacks in the upcoming draft
Kicking off the list of quarterbacks already scouted by the Steelers is Jalen Milroe of Alabama. He is coming into his second season as the starter for the Crimson Tide. This is a big year for him to throw up bigger numbers as a passer. He has shown the ability to be a smart decision-maker and use his legs when called upon. His mobility would be a nice fit in Arthur Smith's offense.
Milroe current draft projection: 2nd-3rd round
Quinn Ewers is someone the Steelers got to watch dominate against Michigan. He made the Wolverines look like soft putty in his hands on their home field. Ewers provides great size and pedigree to the quarterback position. He has a ton of starting experience and remains young. He isn't much of a runner, so his fit in the Steelers offense could be questionable when it comes to that trait.
Ewers current draft projection: 1st round
Not once, but twice have the Steelers been in attendance to watch Shedeur Sanders play quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes. Right now, Sanders has come under fire for many different situations surrounding the team, which is coached by his father, Deion Sanders. He hasn't played well to start the season, but he is someone the Steelers should ignore in the upcoming draft.
Sanders current draft projection: 1st round
A sleeper quarterback for the 2025 NFL draft is Drew Allar. The Penn State player is heading into his second season starting for the program and is someone who could bolster his draft stock in a hurry. He is the perfect frame for what NFL teams look for in franchise quarterbacks. He has also shown some mobility early in the season. If he can shoot his numbers up, he could be a quick riser.
