Incriminating play from Justin Fields vs. Colts could have Steelers switching QBs
By Tommy Jaggi
In the first three games of the season, Justin Fields executed Mike Tomlin's game plan to a tee. The 25-year-old quarterback played mistake-free football to lead the Steelers' offense to long, sustaining drives and dominate the time-of-possession battle, while the defense did the heavy lifting.
Unfortunately, he was asked to do significantly more against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, and things did not go well.
Thanks to poor play on both sides of the football, the Steelers dug themselves into a 17-point hole in the first half. That's when Fields tried to do too much.
In an effort to make something happen, Fields looked to extend the play in the second half. But he made an incriminating mistake when he ran backward to evade pressure. In doing so, the Steelers' quarterback fumbled the football and gave it back to the Colts (who held a 17-3 lead).
While Indy's following possession would result in a missed field goal, Fields blew an opportunity for Pittsburgh's offense to make something happen. Sadly, the talented quarterback reverted back to his old ways in Week 4.
Justin Fields needs to play under control for Steelers to have a chance
We've all seen Justin Fields make some incredible plays for the Chicago Bears over the past three years. He has the arm strength to drive the ball deep down the field and the legs to burst away for explosive plays on the ground.
However, Fields is notorious for making poor decisions and putting the ball in harm's way. That's what he did when essentially took points off the board by fumbling the ball away to the Colts in the second half.
For the Steelers to be successful, they need to play great defense and take care of the football. Down 14 points, Pittsburgh's starting quarterback couldn't put the ball in harm's way. If these mental errors continue, it's not hard to imagine a scenario in which head coach Mike Tomlin turns to Russell Wilson when he's healthy and cleared to play.
Regardless of the game situation, Justin Fields needs to show that he can play under control and that he's got what it takes to help his team fight back in football games when they're at a deficit.
