Steelers target from the Texans: CB Darius Phillips

Despite having one of the worst records in football, the Texans also boast one of the deepest cornerback rooms that I could find. They have invested well in some young players as well as adding capable veterans to round out the room. Because of this, a name like Darius Phillips could be a victim of roster numbers.

While a cornerback, Phillips is a potent return man. That is where he has made arguably his biggest impact since entering the league with the Bengals. While the Steelers rarely use defensive players as return men, Phillips could provide an upgrade there if their current group of return men proves ineffective.

Phillips was also a capable slot cornerback early in his career. While I wouldn’t bank on him being a plug-and-play starter, he could serve as a capable second option if the team insists on using Patrick Peterson there. Phillips would help out in multiple areas and be a sound veteran to add after cutdowns.

Others considered: RB Mike Boone

Mike Boone almost got the nod here as a potential third-back. He was supposed to break out last year, but he was quickly replaced in the Broncos backfield. He can chip in on special teams and provide a more steady veteran presence in the backfield.
