The Pittsburgh Steelers just pulled off the biggest heist in the 2023 NFL Draft. Omar Khan was originally slated to make their selection at pick 80 overall in the third round. However, they elected to trade back in an effort to pick up a fourth-round pick.
With the 93rd pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers stole Georgia tight end, Darnell Washington. The mammoth tight end didn't have a productive college career. In three seasons, he recorded just 45 receptions for 774 yards and 3 touchdowns (with his best season coming in 2022), per ESPN stats.
However, don't let the lack of production fool you. Washington was arguably the best blocking tight end in the nation. At nearly 6'7'' and 264 pounds with massive 83 3/4'' arms, Washington essentially acted as an offensive tackle at times thanks to his outstanding ability to bully defenders at the point of attack.
Unfortunately, there is a reason that Washington fell as far as he did. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the big Georgia tight end was flagged by teams for medical reasons as there are concerns with his knee. Still, if the issues aren't too severe, this has a chance to be one of the best value picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
What Steelers are getting out of Darnell Washington
From day one, Darnell Washington projects as the starting 'Y' tight end for Pittsburgh -- likely taking the place of Zach Gentry. Washington will do most of his work in-line, but he is deceitfully fast with 4.64 speed with the ability to stretch the seam.
Washington may never be an elite receiving option for Pittsburgh, but you couldn't dream up a better player to pair with Pat Freiermuth. Pat will act as the 'move' tight end, whereas Washington can do the things that he can't.
This is a pick that is sure to help the Steelers in the running game, and Washington should be an instant upgrade over Zach Gentry at tight end. The Steelers have made it a point to add more beef to the front line and Washington is going to be a fantastic blocker.
