Despite little cap space to work with just before the start of the legal tampering period, Omar Khan took a book out of the old Kevin Colbert playbook. The new Pittsburgh Steelers GM made several cuts and restructures that allowed his team to be very active during the 2023 free agency period. This allowed for an active free agency that included five fairly significant outside signings.

Recently, members of Pittsburgh's free agent class selected the jersey numbers they will wear in black and gold. Here's what each player will be wearing, according to the Pittsburgh Steelers Twitter account:

After some controversy about wearing the famous number seven, Patrick Peterson immediately agreed with fans and switched to number 20 (formerly worn by the team's top cornerback, Cameron Sutton). Peterson is cousins with former Steeler Bryant McFadden, who also wore number 20 during his tenure in Pittsburgh.

Linebacker Cole Holcomb will stick with the same number 55 he wore during his first four years in Washington. Let's hope he represents it better than Devin Bush did. Meanwhile, fellow linebacker addition, Elandon Roberts, will wear Shazier's old number 50 (most recently worn by Malik Reed).
Rounding out the group, offensive line additions Nate Herbig and Isaac Seumalo will wear numbers 71 and 73, respectfully.

Steelers might not be done yet

Obviously, the Pittsburgh Steelers have done most of the damage they will ultimately do during the 2023 free-agency period, but that doesn't mean they are done just yet. Though they will need additional cap space to sign their rookie class, as well as carry into the regular season in the event of injury, a few lower-level signings are not out of the question.

It also seems possible that the Steelers could retain a few of their own. The most notable name still unsigned is starting safety and former first-round pick, Terrell Edmunds. Last year, Edmunds inked a one-year deal with Pittsburgh just before the NFL Draft.

At least seven more jersey numbers will be claimed at the end of April with a new draft class set to come on board. Barring any changes, here are the numbers you can expect the newest members of the Pittsburgh Steelers to wear in 2023 and beyond.
