Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not yet considered a lock for the Hall of Fame
By Tommy Jaggi
Three things in life are sure: death, taxes, and Hall of Fame head coaches of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unlike any franchise in sports, Pittsburgh has been incredibly blessed to go from Chuck Noll to Bill Cowher to Mike Tomlin. They are the only team in football that has had just three head coaches since the NFL merger.
Each of these three coaches has earned at least one Super Bowl win in all three have thoroughly impressive resumes. Collectively, the trio of Noll, Cowher, in Tomlin have combined for the best win percentage in the NFL since the merger, according to Statmuse.com.
Despite some incredibly tough shoes to fill in an organization that already had prestigious head coaches, Mike Tomlin has put together quite the resume himself. in addition to a Super Bowl win, Tomlin has a higher career win percentage than Bill Cowher and has surpassed him to become the second longest-tenured coach in Pittsburgh Steelers history.
But even with all of the accolades he has earned in the fact that he hasn't had a losing season in 16 years in the NFL, Tomlin is somehow still being disrespected in media circles. According to The 33rd Team, Tomlin is not yet considered a lock to make the Hall of Fame someday. instead, he is listed among three other head coaches as likely Hall of Fame candidates.
The only two current head coaches to be considered locks for the Hall of Fame our Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Tomlin falls in the next tier of 'likely' Hall of Fame candidates alongside Pete Carroll, John Harbaugh, and Sean Payton.
Mike Tomlin will be in the Hall of Fame
Being listed as a likely Hall of Fame candidate obviously isn't a bad thing, but what more does Mike Tomlin have to do to solidify his name in Canton someday? The veteran head coach already has 16 years under his belt and his team has had one of the best records in football over his tenure. Tomlin's resume also includes 17 playoff appearances, 8 playoff wins, an AFC Championship, and a Super Bowl championship.
While you can certainly make the case that Belichick and Reid should be in a tier of their own, Tomlin isn't far behind -- at least on paper. though the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach doesn't have multiple Championship wins, he does have a record of 163-93-2 in his NFL career, per Pro Football Reference. This puts his career win percentage just below Reid's at 63.6 percent compared to 64.1 percent.
At the end of the day, we would all assume that Mike Tomlin is going to have a bust in Canton. Even if he is only considered a likely Hall of Famer right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach will solidify himself as a lock Hall of Famer in the near future.
