Steelers lose pivotal pass rusher to frustrating injury vs. Chargers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled to garner much pressure against Justin Herbert in the home opener. Generating more pressure has likely become even more difficult as Alex Highsmith has left the game due to injury.
Just before the Steelers' final offensive possession, Alex Highsmith quietly left the field with an injury and was replaced by Nick Herbig. He was immediately taken into the blue medical tent and when he emerged moments later, he reportedly showed frustration by throwing something on the sideline.
Reports now indicate Highsmith is doubtful to return after sustaining a groin injury. Highsmith leaves the game with a single tackle in the stat sheet and no QB Hits.
Highsmith pairs with TJ Watt to form one of the most dangerous edge-rushing units in the NFL. So far they have been stonewalled by the young but extremely talented Los Angeles offensive line.
Herbig moves in to replace Highsmith, which should ease the minds of the Steelers fanbase. Herbig flashed in the preseason with a few sacks, picking up right where he left off in his rookie season last year.
Still, as exciting as Herbig has been as a pass rusher, he's largely unproven against the run. The Steelers could mix in DeMarvin Leal against heavier packages from the Chargers' run-heavy offense.
Groin injuries can be tricky, made apparent by the doubtful designation, and it's not the first time in his career he's dealt with a groin injury. We'll monitor whether Highsmith re-enters the contest and listen for Mike Tomlin's postgame assessment of the injury.
