Roster building isn't over just because the NFL Draft is in the books. As teams celebrate their draft haul and look forward to what lies ahead, they are busy rounding out their summer roster with undrafted free agents, The Pittsburgh Steelers were on top of things as soon as the draft concluded.
Historically, the Steelers don't like to hand out signing bonuses to undrafted free agents. This means they don't often reel in impressive undrafted free agent classes as other NFL teams are willing to outbid them. But we have seen good UDFAs come through their doors,
Jaylen Warren is one of the most recent success stories. He has had a remarkable two-year career so far, making up half of Pittsburgh's two-headed rushing attack.
So who could be next in line? Here's every Steelers undrafted free agent signing in 2024 so far.
Steelers undrafted free agents:
- Beanie Bishop, CB, West Virginia
- Daijun Edwards, RB, Georgia
- John Rhys Plumlee, QB, Central Florida
- Julius Welschof, DL, Charlotte
- Jacoby Windmon, LB, Michigan State
The Steelers didn't spend a draft pick on a slot cornerback, but they could be looking for one as an undrafted free agent. Beanie Bishop fits the bill. After four seasons at Western Kentucky, Bishop played his final college season at Minnesota before declaring for the NFL Draft.
Pittsburgh also added to their running back room with Georgia's Daijun Edwards. At just 5'9 5/8'' and 207 pounds, Edwards is small coming into the NFL, but his size compares favorably to Jaylen Warren. Edwards racked up over 2,000 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns during his career in the SEC.
With just three quarterbacks on their roster by the end of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Steelers quickly added a fourth with John Rhys Plumlee. The Central Florida prospect spent three years backing up Matt Corral at Ole Miss before transferring to UCF. Plumlee is an excellent athlete with 4.51 speed, but at 5'11 5/8'' and 203 pounds, he is undersized for the position.
One of their most interesting undrafted free agent signings is Julius Welschof -- a German-born player who began his career at Michigan before transferring to Charlotte. Welschof appeared in just 4 games this season, recording 4 tackles. He measured in at 6'6 1/2'' and 257 pounds at his Pro Day.
Jacoby Windmon was one of the five undrafted free agents added to the Steelers' roster immediately after the draft. The Michigan State linebacker didn't test as a great athlete and he appeared in just 3 games this season as a redshirt senior. He began his college career at UNLV.
As the Pittsburgh Steelers sing more undrafted free agents, we will update the tracker. NFL teams can carry 90 players on their summer roster. This number must be cut to 53 by the deadline just before the start of the season.
