Tight Ends (4):
Steelers roster prediction: Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward, Zach Gentry
There are some real questions with this group as to how many players total will be kept, but I have to like the odds of four total players being utilized here. As mentioned before, Heyward has been used all over the field, and while he is on the tight end depth chart, he will see snaps at various different positions.
Pat Freiermuth could be in for a breakout season in this offense. He has already established himself as a steady receiving option, but a rebound in terms of scores and heavier usage down the field could really launch him into the conversation of a top tight end. It is a big year for Freiermuth, as he will likely want a new contract next offseason.
Darnell Washington is already a fan favorite given his rare size and athleticism. While I do think a lot of people are overestimating his role as a rookie, at least in the passing game, he should see time as the second tight end and in blocking situations.
Finally, Zach Gentry rounds out the room as a fine third option that can fill in for either Freiermuth or Washington if one were to miss time with injury. He isn’t flashy, but he knows the offense and is a stable presence.
Potential surprise cut: Gentry
If the team decides to go lighter here, Gentry is easily the odd man out. He doesn’t offer much special team value and is a redundant player given the other names in the room. With Heyward being used in so many different ways though, I feel like Gentry can still make this roster to round out this room.
