This isn't how we wanted to start our day. Since the Steelers' early exit from the NFL Playoffs, fixing the quarterback position has been the number one focus leading up to the 2025 offseason. Unfortunately, the latest comments from General Manager Omar Khan won't offer encouragement.
On February 25, Khan spoke to the media ahead of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine where he asked about the state of the quarterback position. Though the Steelers GM noted that 'all options are on the table', he confirmed that the goal is to get a deal done with Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, ESPN's Brooke Pryor reported.
Steelers GM Omar Khan said their goal is to get a deal done with a QB - preferably Justin Fields or Russell Wilson - before the start of free agency. He said the Steelers have engaged with both of them, and he believes both QBs are interested in returning.

While many fans are in Fields' corner and would be okay with the polarizing quarterbacks taking the reigns for the 2025 season, it's impossible to get behind Russell Wilson for another season.
Khan's recently revealed quarterback plans likely mean the Steelers won't spend big on a free-agent quarterback like Sam Darnold or attempt to trade for a QB like Matthew Stafford.
Steelers would be foolish to sign Russell Wilson for the 2025 season
As much as I would like to believe that Justin Fields would succeed if given the chance, the fact that he was benched after Week 6 during 2024 and never saw the field for more than a few snaps proved the team didn't have the confidence to turn to him later in the season.
But, no matter what, Russell Wilson can't be the answer they go with at quarterback.
After taking over the starting job in Week 7, Wilson looked encouraging against pedestrian competition. Then we saw the real Wilson—the one the Denver Broncos paid to go away. Over the final five games of the year (including the playoffs), Wilson's offense struggled to move the football. This resulted in 14 points scored per game en route to a 0-5 record.
Wilson wasn't good enough to get the job done at 36 years old on a $1.2 million veteran minimum contract. What makes Omar Khan and the Steelers think he will be good enough at 37 years old when he's making over ten times that amount? The veteran has arguably had four bad seasons in a row, and things aren't about to turn around now in the final stages of his NFL career.
Pittsburgh needs real change at the quarterback position. It starts here. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard to get excited about anything else this franchise does during the 2025 offseason if 'running it back' at quarterback is their best solution.
